Blackberry as tethered modem for laptop

I am trying to setup my Blackberry Pearl as a tethered modem to my laptop so I can get online through the BB device.

So far, I have connected the BB through a USB cable to COM6 and it self diagnosis okay, I then setup a network connection with the ASN (isp.vodafone.ie) and user (vodafone) and password (vodafone). It appears to connect until it gets to the stage of verifying the password, but it fails here. I have disabled the firewall in case that is blocking it, but it still fails. Any ideas what I should do next? What type of activity (if any) is seen on the BB whilst actually connected and working

You may have to temporaily cancel your current blackberry connection to allow the device to act as a modem.
