Recommendation for (FREE) essential shortlist (say 5 products) for a clean PC?

Caveat

Hi

Have looked at the key posts - very informative but nearly too much info for the likes of me. I have a current problem and assuming I can get connected this evening, I intend to download and run a few FREE utilities.

Currently on my PC (XP) is McAfee and PConPoint only.

No real intention of keeping McAfee BTW, it's just that I was given the PC and it was on it together with a years sub. so just left it there.

Could I have suggestions for a shortlist please and preferably for programmes that have no known conflicts either with each other or McAfee?

So far it seems AVG and CC cleaner are two definites anyway.

Any more that get the top votes?

Going, forward,

Use Firefox and the NoScript plug-in as your browser.

Ditch Adobe Acrobat and Shockwave.

That should help keep the bad stuff off your PC.

Actually 6 programs. I use both Adaware and Spybot, even though they both essentially do the same thing.

Firefox - browser
Thunderbird - email
Spybot Search & Destroy - spyware
Adaware - spyware
AVG - antivirus
Zonealarm - firewall

What can you use instead of adobe and shockwave?
Well, the Mac can read PDFs without Adobe and Foxit is a much more efficient PDF reader for the PC.

Shockwave? Who needs it? It's mostly used for advertising, your surfing will be much quicker without it.

The problem with these bloated/complicated plug-ins is that they make it easier for viruses to infiltrate your PC.

If you want a healthy PC, you need to feed it a clean diet of pure software with no toxic additives.
