Five-star luxury hotel set to close
09 November 2008By Susan Mitchell
The €70 million, five-star Castlemartyr Hotel in east Cork will close next weekend, although its owners have said it will reopen next year.
The hotel opened in August last year, but has had to cut its prices and has stopped operating under the Capella brand. It was developed by Cork construction group John F Supple, which last month agreed a financial survival package with creditors.
Hotel staff confirmed it would close on November 19, but said it would reopen in February. A spokesman for the hotel said: ‘‘We are in discussions with a new operator, but we are bound by a confidentiality agreement, so I am not in a position to comment."
The hotel initially charged more than €400 per night. Rates have plummeted in recent months, with the hotel advertising mid-week rates of €179 per person sharing for two nights’ bed and breakfast plus one evening meal.
Last month, staff at the 103-bedroom hotel threatened to walk out, claiming the recruitment agency that employed them on behalf of the hotel had said it could not pay them, as the hotel had not paid it in six weeks.
The Castlemartyr resort includes an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, a spa and fitness centre, and was included on Conde Nast Traveller’s 2008 hot list.

I wonder which hotels will be next to follow ....

From a quick look at Tripadvisor, the 3 reviews posted (all by Irish people) were less than convincing. For a hotel to charge these prices while seemingly punching way below the 5 star status it boasts of, it is perhaps is no surprise to read of it's demise.

I stayed there a couple of months ago and to be honest I thought it was excellent. The food was fabulous and while the service had some minor faults, I thought in general it was very good. Price at the time was about 175pp.
Thing is, I signed for the bill without checking (I know, I know) and afterwards my wife noticed that we had been overcharged for a couple of things (like room service, which we didn't have) but htey also ommitted to include on the bill our lunch on one of the days (came to about 80 euro). The net difference was that we owed about fifty euro. So we rang up, explained that we had been undercharged, gave our CC details were cut-off, rang again, were told we'd get a call back, and nothing. Despite our best efforts, they didn't process the extra that we said we owed them. With such internal processes, it is perhaps not surprising that it went to the wall.

The article suggested that it was to reopen in February though. If it does I would certainly return for a midweek break (if prices remain the same)

why would you ring up to say you have been under charged?

For the same reason I would ring up to say I had been undercharged. I believe in paying what's owed, no more no less.
What goes around comes around

I'm presuming you would be the type to be filled with outrage if you were overcharged for something........yet when the shoe is on the other foot it's okay for you to pocket the difference:rolleyes:

Well I hope you don't find yourself stuck for a favour at some stage in your life....

i would never give money back to a greedy corporation , and especially to a hotel that was milking the boom charging 400 euro per night . their prices were crazy and do you think they felt guilty about ripping people off, of course not so grow up and stop giving back money to people who dont care about you

No one forced one to stay there, and one assumes that one was made aware of the rates before staying there so what's the problem, if one is stupid enough to pay 400 euro for a night in a hotel then so be it, but when you are made aware of the rates in advance and you chose to pay them then be it on your own head frankly.

. the hotel werent exactly "honest" with their employees about their financial status now were they. if you want to give the money back then send it to one of the employess who havent been paid by this shabby, badly run, greedy corporation!!!
