Just watched a film called No Reservations and the orphaned child (circa 8 yrs old) was left alone at night at least 3 times during the film while the aunt went on various errands, also bear in mind this was not set in a quiet country town but New York?! I was shocked that they showed this as surely this is illegal in America as well?! I assumed it would become an issue in the film but it was never brought up as strange or unusual.

But its a fillum, not real life, like say Constipation Street or or Quare Pity.

Like mathepac say, its only a film. But I don't think its actually illegal here if that's what you mean by "as well". Don't think there's a defined legal cutoff age where its right or wrong to leave a child alone. If there is maybe someone could point to when its stated on some official source rather than what people believe to be the case.

Just goes to show, you let them away with it once, they keep doing it again and again. It wouldn't have happened in my day, I can tell you. Now where's me pipe...

as well as .. ??
Ireland ??

Is it actually illegal ? I agree it is reckless but I know of one parent who does this. She's raising her son on her own (he's now 8) and she would regularly pop out to the local petrol station for a message, leaving him on his own for 5 minutes or so. I always thought it as being too casual, but would not have understood it as being as illegal.

Then again, it depends on the child. From the age of 10, I used come home from school to an empty house. My older sister was meant to be home shortly after, but that rarely happened. My mother was usually home about an hour after me.

And I turned out just GREAT :D !

Hmm I always thought it was illegal to leave a child under 14 home alone as my ex's mum used to always say this to her kids when she got them a babysitter! Could be that old convenient 'white lie' parents use though! Just there have been cases in the media of people being arrested in england for leaving their kid in the car or going on a night out. Maybe I will save on babysitter fees so haha !
