Hi, for the last couple of weeks there's been this rattling/rustling sound thats sounds like its coming from underneath the dashboard. it only occurs on uneven parts of road, which is pretty regular!! Any ideas, its getting progressively worse? Its a BMW 320d, not sure if that makes a difference

That'll be the fuel injector diaphragm.

excuse my ignorance but how serious could that be? i'm driving c 400miles this weekend, i can live with the rattle but could it lead to further damage or even breakdown? is it much of a job to fix it?

Sorry, was only having a laugh, I can only drive cars, no idea how they work. I would guess that it could be any number of things causing a rattle though.

feck ya, i googled it and all!! anything goes wrong this weekend i'll curse that fuel injector!

Saw a thread like this a while ago on an American board, some guy in Arizona.....but his was a rattler under dashboard...probably different cause...:)

One of my kids dropped a coin into my air vent causing a rattling sound when it dropped down into the engine compartment. Did anything get into your vent?

It is very difficult for anybody to diagnose a problem like this without seeing car. If it happens on uneven ground it could well be the anti-roll bar links and bushes. However they dont give a rustling sound more like a small thud thud. When they get bad you hear it over every joint in the road. Best to get it checked by a mechanic to be safe.

Good luck

How are yas. the rattle under the dash could literally be any number of things. i'm a mechanic of 12 years. best thing to do is bring the car to a local garage with a good reputation, especially garages that specialise in german and/or luxury cars.

it might not be as costly to repair as you might think. dont fear the mechneoir :D
