Bicycle crank/chain on right - motorbike crank/chain on left - why?

I guessing it's because most people are right-footed.
For a push bike, it's probably better to have the gear cogs and chain on the side doing most push. It may reduce stress on the mechanism.
For motorbikes, putting it on the left allows your right foot to do more motorbikey stuff, without things in the way.

Right footed people usually have stronger and slightly longer left legs.

Reason being that the left leg is the standing/support leg and the right leg is the manipulating leg. As left leg does most of the supporting, it is stronger.

Think about the difficulty of trying to swing a longer leg to kick a ball while standing on a shorter one!

I ponder this frequently :D

I'm left handed but right footed.....does that explain why I can't play football?

(footies a sore point in the Bubbly household at the mo..suffice to say, I'm stereo typical when it comes to the offside rule..during the Man U v Celtic game is not the time to ask for an explanation even if two goals were "off side" and himself is shouting at the telly)

I still don't get it

Ok, I use left hand for writing, using hammer / screwdriver or other hand tools, fork and spoon but use right hand for things like computer mouse, dinner knife ( but not carving knife which would be left hand) and would aim a gun with right forefinger to trigger. I'd kick with the left foot. Guess I'm really messed up !

Applying the motorbike/bicycle thing to cars....is the gearstick to the left of drivers to facilitate lefties :) ?

You’re in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have. The shopper in front of you has also seen them and is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses. It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes. The shop assistant remains at the till waiting. Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma. She prepares to throw her purse to you. If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes! At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and “whilst it is in flight” you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes! But, you must always remember that until the purse has “actually been thrown”, it would be plain wrong for you to be in front of the other shopper. As that would mean youre offside.

....at would mean youre offside.

Best explanation of OSR I've ever read. But what I can't figure is how does the ref manage to keep his eyes on (a) the potential thrower and (b) the numberous potential catcher(s) ?

Mrs. SLF has a bit of reading to do when I catch her next.

If it was on the driver's right, it would be outside the car altogether!
Not a bad idea, would make a bit of room in some of the smaller cars.
