Aldi LCD

Manufactured by LG, Lucky Goldstar, for Tevion, they are good quality and good value.

BTW Tevion sponsor at least one Mercedes in the German DTM series or races.

I bought the 42" one from them about a year ago, have it in bedroom and it's fine, no problems with it. At the time it was considerably cheaper than the opposition, not sure how they compare now.

Better value in NI with Argos?

Aldi 26" TV = €379.99

Argos 26" TV = £199.99

But is thealdi tv any good? Are the Specs good? and is the argos one in the south?

I would say no to this LCD. The specs are reflected by the low price (very low contrast ratio, only 1 Scart and a declared brightness of only 50 cd/m2). OK it has 2 HDMI connections in but that's about all. My advice is buy from the reputable manufacturers. Tevion does not fall into this category in my opinion. Why jeopardise your viewing pleasure over a couple of hundred euro? At the end of the day it is something you will want to have for at least 5 years.

The Argos one I mentioned is available in NI.

Not sure if it sells in RoI, but if anywhere near the border surely it would be worth €50 worth of petrol to get it.

Are there 2 contrast ratios one static and one dynamic?

Yes there are. Read here. The key thing is that the Aldi LCD has a declared contrast ratio of 800:1. This is very very low when compared to models manufactured by the "reputable" companies.

What does cd/m2 mean
Brightness, as it is most often used in marketing literature, refers to the emitted luminous intensity on screen measured in candela per square metre (cd/m2). The higher the number, the brighter the screen. The Aldi LCD has a declared value here of 50. This is again very low when compared to better models.

The bottom line is that the Aldi LCD is indeed very cheap, but in my opinion, the specs are poor and the picture quality may well be complete rubbish as a result, especially on Standard Definition images i.e. normal TV.

Can you suggest a good widecreen lcd 26-32
The best LCD's are consistently made by Panasonic. Sony and Samsung probably are next in line. Philips and Toshiba are good also. LCD TV's are an investment and my advice is to fork out a bit more to get better quality.

Whennlooking at an lcd should one check the static or dynamic contrast ratio

But someone mentioned that the Aldi TV is made by LG, who would be classed as a reputable company when it comes to LCDs.

They get good reviews for their own brand TVs, and they also make TVs (that are rebadged) for many big name brands.

So why the poor spec on this one? Perhaps they are given a price to make it for for Tevion, and they have to build it within their limits?
