Is a backpack a 'man bag'?

The tea leaves on the Luas sure love the backpacks, they don't care if they're a man bag or not.

Nope, to me a man bag is something carried in the hand or underarm or slung over one shoulder (with one strap).

If I see a guy with a backpack and a suit I assume he's parked his bike somewhere.

I have a nice John Rocha bag with a single strap, small pocket for a mobile and zipped inside pockets for a wallet/book etc, that my wife bought me. Is that a man-bag? :)

What about commuters with laptops?

Now you're getting technical ;) I hadn't really thought about it too much to be honest. A laptop bag is just that, a laptop bag. My other half wouldn't dream of slinging his over his shoulder but I know plenty men who do.

Can you post a picture? Definitely sounds like a man bag though, particularly if it is indeed 'divine'. Maybe any bag bought by a woman for a man is suspect...

I commute and use a laptop bag to carry around a load of stuff, but no laptop.

- newspaper
- book
- work stuff to not look over at home
- portable media player & headphones
- PDA
- chequebook

Wallet, keys & phone are generally in jacket/trouser pockets.

To all intents and purposes, it's a handbag but I can only admit that through the anonymity of a message board ;)

Is that a backpack laptop bag or one of the 'messenger bag' type laptop bags? You're starting to worry me now.

'messenger bag' type laptop bag. Brand is Timberland. I bought it on ebay to replace a backpack-style laptop bag which used to serve the same purpose.

Mr Bubbly carries all of the above in his......and his lunch! (no laptop)

Yup! and Mr Bubbly would never admit it publically either.:D

TBH the fact that it's called a 'man bag' is enough to put me off.

I just chuck my lunch, any paperwork etc etc into the back seat of the car and listen as it slides and bumps around during my morning commute.

If I was using public transport I'd probably use some sort of chunky soft briefcase - if they still exist.

My OH uses one for things like travelling, he has a soft leather man bag that he carries passport, tickets, ipod, wallet, chewing gum etc....

His is a large rectangular shape with one long strap to go over shoulder.

When he first got it he claimed it was similiar to DJ type bag for carrying records about. He has since admitted its a plain old man bag.

He is kinda metro anyway so it fits with the image.

I pretend I'm going for the 'student look', but in reality its convenient and since I turned 30 I'm past caring that much what people think...
