Folks,
Just a quick question, myself and my wife have fully paid medical family insurance policies from individual employers, the question I have is can we claim twice if the occasion arose or would it be better to combine both policies for a better level of Health Cover?
Regards,

Many insurance policies have an "other insurance" exclusion condition meaning that they will not pay out for incidents which are covered by other insurance claims. Check your policies for clarification. Seems strange to double insure in the first place.

With health insurance, in cases of dual (or more) insurance, each insurer will only cover their proportionate costs. So if you have two health insurance policies, and both policies on their own would have fully covered a given cost, then each insurer will only pay half the cost.

If they are both paid for by the employers, then you're probably both paying BIK (or you should be anyway) so cancelling one policy means that you'll be reducing your tax bill a little bit. In any case if you are paying BIK, make sure to get onto Revenue and claim your 20% tax relief if you haven't done so already.

Clubman you may have mis-interpeted the content of the post or maybe I wasn't clear enough, but to try and make things more transperant - Both policies are with the same Health Insurance Company - I work for Employer "A" and my wife works for Employer "B",
Both employer are paying for the same Cover Plan 100% and I was wondering if you can only claim from one policy per ailment would it be an option to combine the monies paid in by the Employers and raise the level of cover accordingly, as I think that one of the policies is null & void. Any suggestions most welcome.

Assuming both policies provide identical cover for the entire family, cancel one of them and save yourself the BIK.

OK - that point was not clear from the original post in my opinion. Whether or not you can combine the benefit in kind from the two employers to do this depends on the employers but I can't see too many offering to do this as it would be too much hassle for them.

I have a serious question here please. My son. he's 3 years old now, is double insured. He's under my husband's policy and mine. He had a major surgery back in April. I applied for the surgery on both insurance before he had it done, and they approved it. My husband's policy covers 90% of the surgery, and mine is suppose to cover 80% of it. My understanding of it was that my husband's policy will cover most of it then my policy would pick up the rest of the bill. Well, they didn't. I spoke with the representative, and they said my husband's insurance paid more than mine would have paid therefore, my policy wasn't used. I'm planning on calling them again and clarifying with them what covers what and who. Both my husband's and my insurance is with the same company. My husband is the primary. So my question is; Is that how it's suppose to work? Wasn't my insurance suppose to pick up what was left of the bill? I mean, what's the purpose of having two insurance for my son? Please help. Thanks a lot.

Theres no point! The policy that picks up the most cover will be used. Its dual insurance. One would assume that the dual insurance on your part is an error as another policy of that nature will not pay the excess of the other, or the portion deemed to be paid by the assured.

Yeah, that was my understanding. I guess i was wrong. Thanks.

If full cover in the particular hospital is something you want for your son, perhaps you should look at upgrading his product to something that gives that and dropping the second policy?
