Hi,

I am looking for a new 'family' car. My requirements in order are :

Reliability
Safety
Economy
Room

I have no need for speed/power as such. Not interested in people carrier/4x4s. And I am not self conscious about make/model I drive.
Price range 5,000 to 12000.

I was thinking Skoda Octavia.
Someone else suggested Toyota Avensis but the seem expensive relative to other similar cars.

Any advice appreciated.

I can tell you what car not to buy is a 04 peugoet 307sw 1.6 petrol I have one and I wish I did not the electrics is a mess. toyota is a safe bet so I was told after I bought the 307. anyways good luck

I concur. Do not really buy a French car. Glad to see you do not want an SUV or people carrier.

Cars that spring to mind depending on your budget are starting from the top - All Diesel of course considering MPG and VRT.

Audi A4 New Model. Roomy and Safe and good value for money at entry level.
Volvo S40(Saloon) or V50(Estate). Great Value if you go for the Lux.
Toyota Avensis is a good option, great spec and safe.

The Skoda Octavia are quite good and the current model is basically a mock up of the (up to) 2005 Passat externally. Its a big car in comparison to others so consider this for parking. Do you need a car that long?(Saloon).

I had a Renault Laguna, unreliable and high depreciation. Garages simply do not want them.

I have a 307HDI and it was good but french design to tacky interior. MPG were good and suggested good safety, which thankyfully I never had to test.

The new Ford Mondeo is fantastic and always has been a good choice for the middle of the road budget and taste. The entry level model (Lx) is basic as basic is so try to enter the market at the Zetec level. Focus saloon is ugly, I had a 2005 zetec hatchback, lovely Zetec model. The 2008 Zetec hatchback looks great.

Im currently driving a 2006 Audi A4 Diesel S-Line. I cannot recommend it enough. I had a 2005(old shape) Passat prior to this.

Thanks for the info. Yes,I will never buy a French car again - had Peugeot and Citroen before. Comfortable but totally unreliable.

Also, I do not want a new car. I was thinking more 2004/2005.
And yes I need a big saloon car (2 kids). I will look at the Fords.

I currently drive a 1.4 petrol octavia. In fact my wife has one also. Very good car, the new shape is quite attracive looking IMHO.

Used to have a Mondeo in the past, also very good.

The only change I would possibly make is going for a diesel next time round.

If you want to purchase a new car but need more practical info on the vehicle you want to buy then read a roadtest.

It's one of the few ways to get a third party source of info on the car that you might purchase.

Do you reckon a salesperson will give you a straight answer?

Or will a manufacturers brochure tell you that the car really isn't all that good?

log on to www.drivemagazine.ie and READ a road test on what you are after.....it's the only way to go.

If I buy a 2004/2005 Octavia 1.9 Diesel, will I still be hammered for tax ? Should I buy one in UK and newly register here and save with new tax on emissions rules ?

Old road tax rules apply to anything pre 08.

Toyota Corolla is a good all rounder

I would agree. I got an 07 Toyota Corolla - year old. Excellent, reliable car. Got only 1.4 and very economical. It is the new model and is as roomy as the Avensis - which the OH drives and is also a good car. You can't go wrong with Toyota as they are so reliable. Have been driving them for years! Recommended.
