Our 10+ year old CRT TV (please don't snigger) is having "colour problems" so I'm looking for an LCD alternative but I'm unsure of which size to go for. The CRT is 26" viewed at a distance of approximately 3.5 to 4 metres and I find it a little small. What would be a good size for that kind of distance?

Any recommendations? I'm hoping to get decent one for under €1000. Is that realistic?

I would be interested in watching HP vodcasts by connecting a laptop to the TV. We don't have a Blu-ray player or HD TV channels at the moment.

You'll have no Problem findign a reasonble LCD Tv for that moeny. Computer world is selling 50 inch samsung for 899 I think at the moment (dont' know how good the samsung is, personally I'd hold out for a sony).

I'm not sniggering I have a 12 year old 28" JVC CRT, only been in the repair shop once and still has a great picture. Let's see who can beat that. I hav'nt succumbed to the OTT marketing that they throw at you these days.

I have a Philips 32" LCD for last 2 years, i like it. Hardly normal has it's big brother in 42" for around a grand in all black very nice looking.

Loads of 32 and 37 inch out there now for way under a thousand, some even as low as 550 lots around the 650 -850 mark if thats size u'd be interested in.
All the main stores and independents and xtravision and
Dunnes/Tesco do offers on lesser know and recognised brands

depends what u mean by decent, do u need a recognised brand? How "into" tvs are etc.
All the big brands have dropped hugely in price

you probly know of course that CRT pic is still Streets ahead of LCD. The only good Reason to change (apart from wanting to be up to date) is Power Consumpion.

and space - my last CRT, a 28" Philips widescreen was 50 cm deep.

a 32" LCD would be a nice upgrade...it really depends on what size you can fit in, budget and what will suit your room.

I still have my Panasonic 28" CRT in my living room. Apart from DVD's showing in letter box format on teh screen, I would hang onto it.

I picked up a 32" Mirai LCD TV from Tesco last Xmas for €350. Super TV and does the job

get it fixed cheaply. Were being sold a con. all flat tellys have worse picture that the old tv's when viewing standard broadcast tv. Thats progress for you. All flat tvs in showrooms show dvds (bytes of info) , sky hd piped tv (more bytes) or cartoons which have no flesh tones to recreate - never standard broadcast tv which we spend 99% of our time watching.

Well, I do watch DVDs a bit, probably about as much as TV.

Wasn't David Attenborough's last series and Euro 2008 broadcast in HD by the way?

dmv: Reduced power consumption would be a good argument for getting rid of the CRT. What kind of difference does an LCD make?
