If you are buying a car from a garage and the price seems ok as in comparable with same mileage etc for cars advertised online, how much scope do you have for haggling with the garage
For eg if the car is 18995,what would you expect to get that down by

Hate Haggling !

Don't forget that the prices you see on the online ads are what the seller is asking - not necessarially what the seller ends up getting.

of course you can haggle....the garage man would be very surprised if you did not....and if you have cash..you are a very good haggling position.
"cash is king"

Best position is to get in the mindset that you have another car if this one does not work out. I would try with a discount of 1.5K on that car and see how you get on. i.e. ask will they give it to you for 17,500 for cash.

You have nothing to loose and 1.5K to gain.

Also don't be afraid to walk.

What sort of car is it, might be better able to advice.

If your buying from a big garage, go near the end of the month when salespeople are trying to hit targets. there is always a better deal to be had then.

Garages are finding it really really difficult to sell secondhand cars. Offer 16.000 no more and check com parables on Carzone.ie

With all the talk about how hard it is to sell a second hand car you would expect to see some very good value out there but not really from the advertised prices . Private sellers seem to be looking for the same prices as a garage ,whereas I would expect to pay less from a private buyer as you have more comeback with a garage and some kind of guarantee.
I guess it is hard to tell what the cars are really selling for and lots of people just will hold onto the car if they don't get the price they want.

was looking at a car at start of last year, advertised in forecourt for 18900. While salesman was checking something out for me had a look at his sheet and it said cash price 17000.So my advise would be at a car advertised at 18995 use ur starting point at 18000, expect to get 1000 off with some bit of haggling and any more than that is up to how good u are at haggling urself.Sometimes u might get to a point where the salesman wont budge then start looking for extras.Remeber as well the bigger the car usually allows for more discount and if I was u I would wait til later on in year usually happy to get rid of cars at end of year as they will be a year older on 1st of january
