Hi

Have a pair of very black jeans from warehouse which I love, however after three washes they have faded. I'm wondering if I could dye them black again?, does anyone know if this would work, if so what dye do I use and where would I get a dye for them?

Thanks a mil

Hiya,

Hickey's sell a Dylon washing machine dye. Dead easy. You pour the powder into the washing machine together with salt, put it on a hot wash cycle - depending on whether these jeans are elastic or not - and voila they come back out all nice and black again. just put another dark wash on afterwards to make sure no black residues and keep washing these jeans separate or with blacks only for a while.

Ive done it, 2 different ways, with similiar results.

One way is to use a cold water dye (Dylon do them), you basically put dye plus water plus salt into big bucket and put jeans in, stir every so often (good instructions in dye pack) - and then do the rinsing etc yourself.

Other way os to get Dylon Machine dye - this you put into washing machine with your jeans, and let the cycle run (again instructions given), and you dont have to worry about stirring or rinsing. But you do need to run the washing machine with nothing a couple of times after (or with small amount of bleach) to make sure all dye is gone.

My preference is cold water bucket method, I just feel you have more control and less risk of wrecking the washing machine!!!

A dry cleaners, good supermarket or maybe somewhere like Hickeys should have range of Dylon dyes.

Thanks lads, I have never seen dye anywhere but will try Hickeys today. Might give the bucket one a go - would be bit worried about washing machine. just didn't want to have to stop wearing them cause I love them - can't believe they faded so quickly.

Petal makes a good point on washing machine type - do dark wash after in case of residue.

Go in and have a look at whats available, I dont think there was such a thing as machine dyes around when I first dyed something so I might just have preference based on early success if you know what I mean!!!

I've been dying black in the washing machine for god knows how long. never had any problems with this affecting the machine - never thought about running a course of bleach afterwards rather than doing a couple of black washes, so there's something new I've learnt today!

I usually just run the machine on empty with plenty of powder rather than using bleach and there has never been any dye residue - bleach is not without it's perils, especially in a washing machine

I use the machine dye with great results. Never had a problem with the dye affecting the next wash either.

Yep - thats why I said small amount (like a capful).
