Alternatives to practicing as a solicitor

I am almost finished my training and it is becoming more and more clear as time goes on that the life of a solicitor is not the life for me.

Although I should never have gone down this road and cannot fathom why I did, now that I have got this far obviously I will finish and qualify. I am trying to think of alternative paths, but preferably paths which would allow me to make use of the training I have received.

My pre-law background is in media & music, and my ideal would be to be able to make some use of my legal training within an arts-type framework. I also enjoy study/academia/research.

I'd be really grateful to hear any suggestions anyone might have. I realise that there is probably no real answer to this!

Sorry if I've posted in the wrong place.

I'd suggest maybe putting the question up in Legal Discussion forum in Boards.ie where you may get a better response.

Have you considered lecturing as an alternative. I'm thinking in one of the law schools at under-grad or post-grad and also the professional programmes (Fe1, Kings Inns, Blackhall)

As a matter of interest Margot, what have you against the solicitor route ?

I'm not a solicitor, but it seems to me to be a profession with a lot of opportunity.

Many solicitors are very well rewarded financially (not that money is the most important thing), and there are a lot of different aspects of law that a solicitor can work in. You might find a job as a solicitor which is perfectly suited to you, or you could set up a practice and be self employed.

Louis - I have nothing whatsoever against the solicitor route as such, I have the utmost respect for most of the practitioners I have encountered and I accept all the positive aspects that you have mentioned.

I personally think I have made a mistake in going down this route and quite simply that it is not for me. Hopefully I will find an area that is suited to me but at the moment that does not seem likely.

Keep your eye on www.rte.ie quite often they are looking for people to work in the variuos legal departments which may go someway to meeting your Media/Arts requirments.

Thanks TheBlock - I have their careers page bookmarked already! That is the direction I would like to head all right.

Many organisations need legal people to check and advise on patent rights, conformance of their activities to legislation, rights to use of third-party 'intellectual property' (especially in the software business).

Possibly these are areas to consider ?
