Is there any way to get a bit more life out of a pair of suit trousers that have gotten worn in the bum? Theres no actual tear in the fabric its just gotten very thin. Could they be lined or something? Seems a shame to throw them away since the jacket part of the suit is fine, thanks.

No. If you line them what will happen is the outer material will still wear away and youll just end up seeing lining instead of bum - which is still a pair of trousers with the bum worn through!!

If the material is plain you could always try to get a matching pair of new trousers to wear with the jacket for an extra lease of life for the jacket?

I always try to buy two pairs of trousers when getting a suit. The trousers always wear out quicker than the jacket.

Have you thought of starting a trend;)

well, there was an embarrassing day in the past with a different pair of trousers where we found out what happened when this situation is allowed to run to its natural conclusion - unfortunately the owner of the trousers didn't notice till he came home and was informed that his underwear/flashes of bum had been showing all day at the office :)

Might go for the "finding another plain pair of trousers" option

Orrrrr! Get a pair of boxers made up with the same material:)

Or stay sitting all day and only walk around when you have your overcoat on :D

This is the reason why a lot of people buy M&S suits because you can mix and match and buy one jacket and two trousers.

You could try a tailors to see if they can be invisibly mended and City Tailors in Mary St. might be able to help there.

They're not damaged. They're worn out. They have paid their debt to the owner and deserve a dignified retirement.

Would you consider putting a patch type thing on the inside using a cloth close in colour to the trousers and sticking it on with wonder web. This work for me on the inside leg of a favourite pair of trousers but I did have some of the same cloth to do this.

How do you know what they are/aren't when presumably you haven't seen them? Surely its up to Toby to decide what they want to do with the trousers hence this thread.

Because of this....

What other proof do you need. They're worn out. WORN OUT I TELL YOU!

The OP was looking for opinions and I gave mine. As has been pointed out, the fabric wll continue to wear until it disappears and all that will remain is a hole (or sight of same!) or some stitched on fabric with an obvious join to the original material. If this represents an acceptable option, it perhaps raises other issues.
