Ist day of Autumn

Was there not some talk of changing the seasons by a month so that "summer" would be june, july, august?

Does it matter what months constitute "summer"? Anyway June and July were hardly much of a summer this year! May was our summer I fear!

I can never understand how much we complain about the weather in Ireland. Especially in summer. I personally think the weather here is almost perfect. The main advantage we have here is LIGHT. Its bright until nearly 11pm at the height of summer. Thats class ! We can remain outdoors until 11pm.
In terms of temperature I am happy once its above freezing and its below 25C.
Anything over 25C and I get sweaty, tired and cranky very easily. I think a lot of Irish are the same.We also find it very heard to sleep on warm nights. Its usually very mild here with no extremes of weather like they get in NY or Stockholm.
My favourite days are the blue sky winter morning where it feels fresh and clean.
RAIN. Yes we get a lot of rain but its not always raining. I often hear people talking about what was on TV the previous evening while the sun was shining and yet complaining that they cant do anything the next evening cos of the rain.
Its about TIMING and ADAPTABILITY.
We know what to expect and the changeability etc - our weather forecasters are fairly accurate these days.
There are also activities that can be done equally well in the rain as in the dry and we
have rain-gear now which is excellent for outdoor activities all year round. Rain doesn't hurt.
For example I love kayaking in the rain, going for forest walks in the rain, fishing in the rain,
dancing, singing in the rain, hill-walkin in the rain (with a GPS!), playing soccer in the rain, running in the rain, standing naked in a field full of thistles in the rain, golfing in the rain, splashing in puddles in the rain, swimming in the sea in the rain.......
And I also love being indoors in the rain, beside a nice pub fire with a tasty pint in my hand.
Especially in winter. And especially if you have earned it by being out in the rain beforehand...

We would not have our beatifully lush landscape without the rain. I lived in Brisbane and I did everything I could to stay out of the sun. The humidity was a shocker and it got dark at 7/8pm at the height of summer. And everything was bone dry. No comparison to the Emerald Isle.

There will be showers for the bank holiday. Make the most of it !

Good for you Teabag, that's a great approach when you live in this country.

I hate our weather but love many other aspects of Irish life. I'm miserable when it rains and do not enjoy doing anything when wet...well maybe not anything ;) It's not just the rain, it's the wind and cold as well, it's been a terrible summer and I'm looking forward to getting out of here for 3 weeks next Tuesday. My wife and kids have been away for 2 weeks already in the sun so when I join them they will have had over 5 weeks away in the sun altogether. We're some of the lucky ones for sure because I couldn't stand not to have consistent sunshine over the summer.

I lived in Phoenix for 7 years and loved the weather there, even the 40 degrees plus, the desert landscape, cactii, parched desert and even the beautiful fauna. Even in the Mediterranean countries the large trees seem to be so colourful.

Anyway, I'm still happy to be back in Ireland all things considered but would love the sun to shine a little more.

Enjoy!

I like a partially sunny day with good "Simpsons" clouds about. 18 to 22 degrees is perfect.
I couldn't imagine living in a country where they get 300+ days of sunshine a year.

Couldn't agree more. Have to admire your love of live!!! You cheered me up!!

It's not just the rain, it's the wind and cold as well,

Nothing like a walk on the beach on a windy day to clear the mind and give you a boost.
There's also kite-flying, wind-surfing, hand-gliding, sailing, umbrella chasing....
All these highs and lows I suppose.

All 3 - Rain, Wind, Cold are a bad day but then you get down to the indoor stuff you need to do...

I think we all love those cold fresh mornings with frost and maybe even some snow. Hill-walking on the 12 Pins on a cold winters day can be breathtakingly beautiful.

...and by the way, according to most of Europe, (and meteorologists generally AFAIK) August is part of Summer - this peculiarly Irish thing of May, June & July being Summer is unconventional and a bit silly IMO.

So there.

Fair play to ye Teabag, yer absolutely right that the weather here isn't all that bad and agree completely about walking on the beach on a windy day - nothing like it. Not so sure about the naked in a field of thistles bit tho! ;)

Which would you prefer as your milieu for running naked?

1. a field full of thistles in the rain, or

2. a desert full of cactii in the sun?:D

Hold on a minute here - I said nothing about RUNNING naked in a field full of thistles !
What kinds of sickos are you ?
Its about STANDING.
Its simple. You wait for a rainy day. You walk into a field of thistles, right to the middle. You
shed your clothes and just stand their soaking it up. The secret is that you cant run anywhere. You have to stay still. Works for me anyway.
Yesterday was a perfect day for it...

teabag....u seriously have made me laugh out loud today!!!! :D having a bad day and i really did giggle hahaha!!!

Despite the fact that Mrs. F. is struggling to keep our two kids amused on yet another rainy day, I still am very happy to live in Ireland. The big word for me is temperate. How many people in Ireland have recently lost their lives or homes due to a tsunami, earthquake, drought, hurricane, volcano?

There's no such thing as bad weather - there's just wrong clothes. :D
