Importing a car from the US, any experience?

I am thinking of importing a car from the US, does anyone have experience of such things as shipping, VRT, OMSP, VAT (does one pay VAT on cars which have more than 6,000km?) I know the VRT is now relative to the emissions. I don't want to cheat the nice chaps at the revenue, I just want to know exact costs, fees and charges before I make the move, rather than being suprised by a few extra thousand euro when I go to register. And what is the rate of import duty? Thanks!!

It can be done but you'll have to potentially pay:

1/. Freight
2/. Insurance
3/. Customs duty (car is from outside EU).
4/. VAT
5/. VRT

It's normally an expensive idea.

If you want exact calculations, you will have to contact the Revenue directly and talk to a shipping and customs clearance company. AFAIK there is no online estimation facility for US-sourced cars

If you want anyone to do the calculations you will need to supply them with more information than "a car from the US".

Also check if the US car needs modifications to comply with EU law. Lights and indicators are two that often would need to be changed and I am sure there are more....

Also, be aware that if you drive a left hand drive car in Ireland your insurance will be more - My insurance was loaded 20% when driving a left hand drive.

Thanks for the comments. I was vague as I haven't decided on exact model yet as I wanted to get some feedback from people who may have encountered problems or otherwise with the revenue, customs or the shipping process. Have many people done this, I know its expensive and LH Drive etc? Thanks for the help

Generally it's prohibitively expensive.

I looked at importing classic Porsche Speedster replicas, freshly rebuild from an old VW Beetle chassis in California.
