Drivers on the phone

I am so sick of this. Everyone is at it - especially van and lorry drivers. No wonder there are so many accidents on the road.

Totally agree. They did a programme on mythbusters which did a test to see which was more dangerous - driving while on the phone or driving while over the drink driving limit?
It turned out it was more dangerous while on the phone.
It particularly annoys me to see people driving in new/newish expensive cars they cannot seem to stretch the extra to pay for hands free!

There is significant research to suggest that handsfree is not actually safer. It's a vexed issue. (the link below is just one article - I have seen reports of more detailed studies before; If I have time I will find and post the links - but I am sure they can be googled)

I didn't read all the research and if the figures back it up fair play. However while I agree that having a phone conversation while driving is distracting and dangerous whether it's handsfree or not . . .but it must be more dangerous to have 1 hand on the wheel than 2.
What bothers me about the drivers using the phone is that they're not holding that phone because they read research showing that it would not be safer to use a handsfree - they do it because they don't give a monkeys.
As for them being more likely to pull in than people using a handsfree? I don't think so.

I'd love a Penatly point gun :D
So I could just go around and "Shoot" these idiots with 2 points
I see so many it's Ridiculous
If I got €1 for every one I "Shot" it'd be a nice little earner too...

Even when you have the built in car phone if you MAKE a call you have to key in the number. Very distracting IMO. I only take phone calls from my husband while in the car as I can safely ignore him when necessary- what's he going to do, divorce me?!

The number of people using the phone whilst driving is increasing dramatically, esp since the instroduction of the penalty points. It appears that people just ignore the fact that they might get a fine and points and batter on regardless.

But to be fair, the severe lack of Gardai on the roads means that 99.999% of them will get off without charge.

Most phone systems now have voice-activated dialling.

I was cycling home last week and encountered a car hugging the kerb, leaving no room for cyclists on the inside. As I went round the outside, I knocked on the driver's window to ask him to leave a bit of room for cyclists. He was in the middle of a business call, with his work papers spread all over the passenger seat, and he had to ask his colleague to hold on while he dealt with the cranky cyclist at his window. Perhaps a bit more attention to his driving and a bit less to his phone might be in order.

The thing that makes me laugh, (and cringe) are these phones with a built in hands free system and the drivers that think somehow, they are obeying the law by holding them in front of there faces and not to their ear.

What really annoys me is watching the dangerous idiots who text whilst driving. Being behind one is like watching a drunk driver swerving all over the road.

And that makes it alright?

Members of the Gardai, the ambulance service and the fire brigade service if they are acting in the course of their duty and holding the mobile phone in relation to the performance of their duty are exempt from this law.

Surely a bit of balance is necessary. Regardless of the legalities ....... I know some people who couldn't whistle and pee simultaneously. And I know some people who could whistle, pee and write a bit of graffiti. If you are changing a CD or twirling the knob is that not a distraction. Taking a wrapper off a sweet or having a swig of the ubiquitous bottle of water, lighting a cigarette or manually opening the window, giving an unruly back seat kid a ticking off or having a good old fashioned sneeze - especially where a few aborted attempts have preceded the big one?
