Does the VRT offioce still charge extra duty on extras on an imported car. If the standard car is worth 10k, but there are extras such as aircon, metallic paint, satnav, etc., do you have to pay VRT on these as well. I know you used to, I got caught out with that when I imported a car 10 years ago.

Don't think so. VRT is based on value and emissions regarding imports. Nearly every car has metallic paint by now!!

If you go to buy a new Ford Focus, metallic paint, aircon etc are extras.

When I imported last time, the value was based on a % of the original value of the car, plus any extras that were not standard on the car the time it was bought.

Not as standard.

Yes - you have to pay for any extras over and above the basic Irish spec car. I believe they inspect all cars once you get near 5k VRT. For cheaper cars it depends on the official as to whether there is an inspection.

Note for BMW/Audi,Merc,Lexus - they(VRO) have access to the factory records to determine exactly what was fitted to the car.

Recently imported a car and paid 3800 euros vrt. The car was never inspected for any extra options it may have. The car could have been a completely different make and model as they never looked at it!!!!

The answer to your question is YES.

I registered my car today. The office was quiet busy and some of 6 attendants were been more 'thorough' than others. I had the print out from the Ros website which he seemed please with so I recommend that and it expediated the whole thing. However when I went to get the plates afterwards I was chatting to a guy who had just completed the same process and the bloke that processed him charged him more for extras that he seen on visual check. The guy that seen me didn't check the car but others were checking.
When you think about it if you buy a new car here you chose your spec and pay the vrt on the total, so why wouldn't it be any different if you imported a car.

Not sure you are 100% correct here. We are talking about 2nd hand cars here & the extras do not effect the selling price that much.

VRT is chargeable on extras. No doubt about it.

As some posters have said the VRO may not even inspect the car so you could get away with it, however they now have access to many manufacturers databases which will tell them exactly what's fitted on the car.

I went to register my car last Monday, only for them to tell me they have to send my cars details to rosslare to get the list of Extras on it. Still waiting on the call so I can find out how much extra I have to pay.

Anyone any idea how they work the depreication out on the extras. Brand new they would come to 6k on my car but I'm hoping not to have to pay on the full whack. Car is 6 months old.

I got charged an extra 70 euro for mettalic paint on my 07 passat, the guy came out and inspected it.
