I need a sandwich. Can't you tell the time?

Some time ago I went to get myself a sandwich from a shop near Harolds X.

Walked up to the counter and asked for a sandwich to which the middle aged woman says sorry we've stopped serving sandwiches for the day but we are serving hot food if you like.

So I asked what time do they stop serving sandwiches so I'd be on time in future she tells me 13.50.

So I said fine and ordered something hot which was a terrible chicken curry.

On the way out I checked my phone and I saw it was 13.45 so either she can't tell the time or she was being a bag.

Needless to say I have not set foot into that shop since.

She was being a bag.

When I read the first few sentences of your post I thought it was going to be a No Country For Old Men skit. :)

so it must have been 13.30 when she said no sandwiches assuming you ate the curry in 15 mins or so.
anyway, these type of businesses need a lesson in customer service like a good old "credit crunching". any decent sandwich shop would have knocked up a quick sandwich for you. i certainly would because you would then come back another day !

I sometimes feel that it is very easy for the staff behind the counter to make these kind of decisions when it is the owner who is paying the overheads. Staff member gets paid regardless.

would it have been different if the chicken curry was nice?

A moot point as I was looking for a Chicken sambo with fresh salad not a chicken curry but maybe if it had been nice then I would have wondered how nice my sambo would have been since the curry was good but it was crap.

I got the strong opinion that the bag was the owner

You're not suggesting I'm an old man are you.

In fact I'm the same age as you 21 years old (and a bit).

..... but what I'm saying is what if you went in for a sambo, got a curry which was he best you ever tasted & recommended to others..... would you have even posted here in that instance?

Yes I would have........
I'd have said went for a fantastic curry but the woman behind the counter couldn't read the clock so only offered me a sandwich instead.....

Worse again, I hope it keeps fine for her, now she has someone who will not buy a sandwich or a chicken curry!

All too true and what makes it worst is its only 2 mins away from the current job I'm on.

It's terrible being bitter.................especially when you're hungry:eek:

Aaaaaaall the time. Most of my work buddies stopped going to one nearby shop just because the staff on the food counter there were so unpleasant. I now go to a place where the food isnt quite so good but you get a smile with your sandwich.

Maybe she said 13:15 and you misheard her?

I called a well known sandwich company to place and order for delivery for 20 people for that lunchtime (called at 9.10am, cut off point for that day's lunchtime delivery is 10am)
I was told they didn't have enough bread!!!!!!!
I was advised i should have called the day before for a large delivery, i advised the girl i tried calling the previous afternoon and the phone kept ringing out, she replied with "we weren't here yesterday"

Sometimes you just can't win...

That's exactly what I am talking about. Probably would prefer not to have to stretch themselves. Paid regardless.

DIfferent goods but a sort of related issue, was in a large toyshop yesterday, looking at bikes. About 7 staff on, no other customers around at time. All staff at tills chatting. Went to till to see if someone could help with questions, they all loooked at me as I approached, with what I can only describe as dread. No movement form any. I asked "can anyone help me regarding a bike " they looked from one to another for about 15 seconds, trying to decide who would get the short straw. Eventually I said, " it's ok I'm not fussy, anyone will do as long as it's today". I got 7 surly looks and one guy got off the stool he was on , took a swig from his bottle of water & followed me. Decided on the bike then was told needed a particular type of connector to pump the tyres , which they didn't have but which were available from a competitor shop in town.....so....where did I go....The competitor, an owner managed business, had the bike & all the bits and knocked €25 off the total without being asked. No prizes for guessing who got the sale.

You're not suggesting that a sandwich shop closes at 13.15.
If I was buying breakfast what you said would make sense!

Well I suppose she did look a bit dim so it is possible.

Did she say that the shop itself closed at whatever time she mentioned? Anyway I'm merely suggesting a possible explanation for your experience/story. Presumably it's not impossible that (a) they do actually stop serving sambos at 13:15 and (b) this is what she said and you misheard it as 13:50?

Did you complain about this at the time or just reserve and nurture your annoyance so that you could post here about it later?

Who knows - maybe she has the same opinion of customers who come in and buy allegedly terrible hot food without a murmur of complaint?

Any sandwich shop selling sandwiches for "lunch" (in most cases 1-2) which stops selling sandwiches at 1.15 is definitely a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Maybe this particular shop concentrates on sambos for earlier lunch birds and hot food for others? Maybe there is more demand and/or margin in the hot food?
