Upgrading Gas Central Heating system

Am soon to be the owner of a 3 bed house that needs a good bit of modernising. One of the first things we need to do is upgrade the central heating system as the radiators are those old small single types that I cant imagine much heat comes out of. Firstly can we just get the radiators and boiler replaced without redoing the whole piping system or does the whole lot have to be re-done.
Has anyone any ideas of how much this would cost at the moment (I have searched through the old threads, but at looking for an up to the min average price?)
And if anyone has any recommendations please can you share them with me

Thanks

I recently had a new Viessmann condenser boiler fitted, new control panel, also 6 new rads (with thermostat valves) in a four bedroom house. €3600. Dublin area.... Hope this helps

Hi Lulu,

I'm renovating a 3 bed semi-detached house in South Dublin and was quoted on average €8000 for a new very powerful modulating condensing combi boiler (to cope with future needs when I extend) and new radiators throughout (9 rads with TRVs and a heated towel rail). This included replacing all plumbing. My pipes were gun barrel which has a limited lifespan and were on their last legs. If you have sound qualplex or copper pipes, I gather that you probably don't need to replace them but one of our plumber members will advise you better. Sounds like mildew got a better deal than me though! I got 4 quotes and all were in the same range though each company recommended a different boiler.

In the end I opted for DiscreteHeat's Thermaskirt instead of radiators. It cost a bit extra but it has freed up my walls and seems to be good. The job is not complete yet but once it is finished, I'll post my verdict. So far though, I'm happy with the the company and product. I have no affiliation with the company, am just a customer.

I definitely would NOT recommend the Bord Gais registered installers I used - don't want to post their name here but PM me if you want to know. I've had 2 leaks since and they completely botched the Thermaskirt installation; fortunately DiscreteHeat have promisted to sort it for me (even though it's beyond their remit). Also, a job that was supposed to take 2 weeks took over a month ... grrrr!

Good luck with your project,

g

I am renovating a 4bed and am in the process of converting from oil to gas. Getting some gunbarrell piping replaced and about 10 new rads with thermostats and a new gas boiler. Cost is 7k. PM me if you want contact details for the installer.

Why PM? Why not post here so others may benefit.

Lulu, sounds like you need to replace all your pipes along with rads and boiler. mildew just changed rads and boiler hence the price differance between mildew and the the other posters. 7-8k sounds a little high but thats Dublin for you. condenseing boiler for 3 bed semi will cost about €1000-€1200. good luck

Thanks for all your replies, Gnubbit just wondering how much extra the Thermaskirt is costing you. Sounds like an excellent system, just had a look on the website and must say I am impressed. Might have a look into it if isnt too much more than 8k

Hi Lulu,

I think it's around €40-50 per metre but not certain of that. I paid about 4k for the thermaskirt and 8k for fitting, plumbing, some extra rads for awkward areas and very expensive boiler. It comes in different heights and mine is a taller height so dearer and I got it all over the house. There's a guy across from me who just got it in certain rooms which is another option.

I'd suggest giving Alan, the guy at DiscreteHeat a ring. I've found him really helpful and he'll come out to give you a free estimate.
