Door to door donations

Yesterday a man called to my door requesting a donation by direct debit for the children of St John of Gods. He produced an id showing an 'old' photo and he was entirely charming. I refused however as I never met this man in my life before, he was not interested in a donation there and then, only my signature for a long term direct debit.
Anybody here had the same thing?

had a oldish gent around here, about 3 weeks ago, looked about late sixties, had a hard back book in one hand, and wanted a direct debit set up,does he sound similar.

I think I signed up with this guy many years ago. He seemed genuine, and the donations were going directly to SJOG.

Surely the manner to donate to a Charity is to pay it directly. My wife and I became so fed up with caller after caller dropping by requesting donations we simply stopped. We have a list of preferred charities and just donate to these - no others. If others now call we simply say sorry.,

Like many I was raised thinking that 'Charity' was that. In fact it is not. The amount of commissions, wages, administration expenses etc., eaten up makes each euro donated, only a few cents actually makes it to the bottom line.

It is all very sad to hear the plight of others. However think of your own circumstances especially if GFB hard times were ringing at your door. Which charity would help you ???

You are dead right, I worked voluntarily for a year with a charitable organisation and I was shocked to the core at the lack of transparency and accountability to public donations. The money never went to the benefit of the clients. I never ever give money to charity now and if I ever see a homeless person begging on the street, they get my money right into their hands and I really don't care whether they use it on booze, fags or food, at least the choice is their own.

By giving money to 'homeless' people, all you're doing is keeping them on the streets. A friend of mine works in Cork Simon community (provides accommodation for the homeless) and she said some of these 'homeless' people make €200 - €300 per DAY by begging. I used to give to them but when I heard that I don't any more. My friend said the best thing you can do is just walk past them...

Well is one not better giving money directly to the Homeless than keeping some Fatcats in a plush office. The Homeless in Ireland are the way they are as there is no Government Policy to care for them. We have this knack in Ireland of looking after others way before we even think about caring for our own.

Don't tar all charities with the same brush.
