Lets scrap our National Anthem

Chorus of the Portuguese national anthem:

To arms, to arms
On land and sea!
To arms, to arms
To fight for our Homeland!
To march against the enemy guns!

Uplifting stuff indeed :)
They march into battle on their arms?!

And if you don't understand the words - have a read of the English translation and see if it makes sense in terms of it's origin.

Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Makes only vague sense really.

It's the uplifting tune that goes with it....not the words! It's also how their fans sing it...with real passion and pride. If you don't believe me, tune in to RTE2 on Wednesday at about 7.40pm and hear it for yourself!

Ah - but which lyrics would we use?

Joy, beautiful sparkle of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium!
We enter, fire-drunk,
Heavenly one, your shrine.
Your magic again binds
What custom has firmly parted.
All men become brothers
Where your tender wing lingers.

....mmmmm tender wings, its got my vote.

There's nothing about war in there!
How can the USE be expected to wage war against the USA over the last of the oil in 2050 without a proper war cry?

We have to get the jump on the Yanks here. Future wars will be a lot different:
Rather than using bullets and munitions, Channon envisaged that this new force would attempt to conquer the hearts and minds of the enemy using positive vibrations, carrying lambs symbolic of peace and employing unconventional but non-lethal weapons to subdue others. Lethal force was to be a last resort. Members would practise meditation, use yogic cat stretches and primal screams to attain battle-readiness, and use shiatsu as battlefield first aid.

Surely you have to admit when the anthem was played in croke park before we played (and beat) England last year in the six nations was pretty awesome, 80,000 Irish people singing with pride. hair raising stuff.

... and what a difference it made to the rugby team - Irelands Call doesn't get the juices flowing........... although the Apres Match version of Ireland's Fall is quite good!

Should we have auditions ala Your-a-Star? When the new anthems run its course and RTE need a new show we could have another bash at it?
Make sure we use English so everyone can clap and sing along to this bouncy and positive song. Make sure its catchy so the lazy dont have to make too much of an effort to learn it and we'll just bury the last one and all the history that goes with it.
(Take moment to note sarcasm.)

We could have Donna & Joe as our official Anthem singers.

We might as well wait for a re-united Ireland before we change the anthem.
