Hi,

Im almost sure that i posted this before but I cant see it right now so apologies....

We have a single block flat roof kitchen extension. We have already put a new kitchen in and tiles etc... but in our first winter we realised how cold it can be! We have now put in new double glazing but is there anything we can do to the walls? Bearing in mind the kitchen is already in etc! I dont really even understand what drylining is! Any advice would be great!

thanks,

a single block flat roof extension was not the way to go, outside walls should be cavity walls with insualtion, the flat roof should have 12 inches loft insulation, so you are off to a bad start from the outset.

Drylining means putting plasterbaord that has a special formulation on the side that is pinned to outer walls but to dry line a single block is not somEthing I have ever heard of! The drylining plasterbaiord will have a covering of tinfoil on one side and they come in various thicknesses. What you should consider is creating a false cavity and filling that with loft insualtion but this will reduce size of room.

what possesed you to use single block?

Maybe Newbie didn't build the extension but bought a new house and put a new kitchen in only to find out over the winter that it was cold and insufficient?

Bang on Rory22, thanks!

I appreciate the comments Noah but the fact is we have this room, we dont want to sink alot of money that we dont have into it. Short of your suggestion to build a cavity and fill it, is there nothing we can do?

Newbie,
Did you perhaps post this on boards.ie some time ago: there is certainly a thread on this issue

Hi
You can now get insulation to fix onto the outside of your house that you can plaster onto. it would mean you would not be doing any work in the house no mess in side.
Amvic in Naas deal in it check out www.amvic.com

oggie B, perhaps you could declare if you have any association with the company whose link you provide - BTW, it is a link to a site in Chinese, AFAICT.

OP, the two links quoted below are solid
Thought as much, I had a similar problem years ago. This link might be helpful-

Also you can get a product from kingspan called 'outsulation' which does away with any need to disturb the inside of the property-
[broken link removed]

and here is another generic (non-product related link) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exterior_Insulation_Finishing_System

No nothing to do with the company just know of some of there stuff its called Amvic and its in Naas so you can google it, Im sure you will get them.

I'm sure most insulation providers will have products like this one

sorry for assuming, using insulation on the outside is a good idea and may solve your problem. ata least i tried.
