Has anyone read "The Four Agreements book based on Toltec Wisdom"?

does anyone have any opinions/knowledge on the above? one of my friends has read it recently and got quite deep into the philosophy of it.

I haven't read it but the book is based on the following

agreement 1

Be impeccable with your word - Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
agreement 2

Don’t take anything personally - Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
agreement 3

Don’t make assumptions - Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
agreement 4

Always do your best - Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

The book is very poorly written. So, just read the cover and save yourself some time. Better yet, save your money too. Let me summarize for you.

1. Tell the truth, to and about yourself and others. Don't gossip. Gossip hurts people.

2. Don't take responsibility for other's words and actions. They have nothing to do with you.

3. Ask questions and be a good listener. Don't assume you know what others want, need, or mean. (Ever heard of 'walk a mile in my shoes'?) And don't assume they know what you want.

4. Always do your best. Does this really need explanation?

It's amazing how many books rehashing common sense are sold.

Ideally marketed as an eastern mystic or noble savage philosophy and if at all possible in opposition to Western Science and then padded out with 20 chapters of anecdotes.

I've read the book, and it won't change your life, or turn you into Gandhi, but I enjoyed it all the same, and felt that the points it made were valid. It's mostly common sense, yes, but it's the kind of common sense that isn't common enough these days!

If you do read it and like it you could check out http://www.amazon.com/Journey-Ixtlan-Carlos-Castaneda/dp/0671732463/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212567028&sr=1-1 (Journey To Ixtlan) by Carlos Castaneda too.

I don't think much of the above review, though. Here's why...

Ulysses By James Joyce

The book is very poorly written. So, just read the cover and save yourself some time. Better yet, save your money too. Let me summarise for you.

1. Man walks around Dublin all day and then goes home to his wife.

2. That's it.

Apocalypse Now By Francis Ford Coppola

The DVD is very poorly made. So, just read the cover and save yourself some time. Better yet, save your money too. Let me summarise for you.

1. American soldier is sent upriver to assassinate rogue commander.

2. "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning"

3. War is insane.

The New Testament By Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

The book is very poorly written. So, just read the cover and save yourself some time. Better yet, save your money too. Let me summarize for you.

1. Jewish youth with connections high up drops out, and preaches love and forgiveness.

2. Authorities reply with the death penalty.

3. He comes back again.

The Old Man And The Sea By Ernest Hemingway

The book is very poorly written. So, just read the cover and save yourself some time. Better yet, save your money too. Let me summarize for you.

1. Old man goes fishing in the sea.

2. Catches a mighty big Marlin and ties it to the side of his boat.

3. The sharks eat it before he reaches the harbour.

4. He goes home and goes to bed.

Jack, thanks for ruining the ending of the next 4 books on my "to read" list. On the plus side, you just saved me a few quid, nice one.

Where did you get those reviews, Jack the Lad? They were brilliant! Loved them, especially Ulysses. :D
