drink licence for marquee

Hi, I am having a marquee wedding this year and I want to hire out some lads that could do the bar for us, not involving us at all, bring the equipment and all the drink, set up the bar/till, sell to the guests and close down that night, only to say goodbye to us and never to be heard of again, leaving with all the takings.

I am sure I have to get a drinks licence for this and I rang up the guards but they are unsure, some mention of going to the district court but ask solicitor to be sure!!! Can I ask does anyone know the proceedure for having a marquee wedding and a bar with regard to licences. What is the best way around this. Is there any businesses out there that has a licence and just sets up? Thanks

Techinally you could be done for this, the law states that you must have a licence to sell alcohol. Dont bother going to the court unless you have about €170,000 lying around spare to contract a licence.

I am sure there are companies out there who are fully licensed, unless you want to charge an admin fee for the food and music and run a free bar, whic may indeed cost you a pretty penny.

The guards are right you can get a one off licence for a special occasion like this but it does involve an application to the District Court. Most of these applications require a notice to be published in a local paper at least a month in advance so you should get in touch with your local solicitor giving plenty of notice to get it in on time.

I haven't done this in a while but I thought you had to have a local pub 'use' their licence with permission from the district court in the marquee. Probably best to check with the district court office or your local solicitor.

Hi, Thanks for the advice, I was thinking that we could use a bar initially and just use their licence but never thought of having to ask the District Court for permission. Himself is sorting it out anyway and he is saying it will be fine, the lads said they would sort it out for us, may cost us €500. Does that sound dodgy to you? It does to me.

That depends on who 'the lads' are. If it's the local branch of the IRA I'd be a little suspicious alright. If they are simply someone making an application to the district court on your behalf then obviously it's the fee they are charging possibly including the court fee. It's up to you to agree this fee or not or to shop around or not.

This is what my local GAA club does. I don't think there are big costs involved, just a good relationship with your local.
