Cost for building largeish bookcase?

We have a large alcove that we would like to get a bookcase made with cupboards at the bottom that will fit into a space that is approx 2.4m long by 2.4m high.

We aren't looking for it to be made in anything fancy (I guess pine or mdf even as likely to be painting it) apart maybe for the doors of the cupboards, it is likely that we will be painting it anyway. We would also like to have a tounge and groove effect on the back. (We have seen the sort of thing we would like in IKEA but it won't be of the correct dimensions)

We have no idea as to what ballpark figure would be charged for this.
Has anyone had similar made and if so what sort of cost was it?

Check out [broken link removed] (in Portobello), they do this kind of thing and prices vary depending on what you're looking for, but I'd reckon around 600 Euro...

We did this in our house also. We got two built each side of the chimney breast. We did get other work done also but i'd reckon the cost of this to be about 500-600 euro? We got it in MDF and painted it then. Very very happy with it.

we got a unit built across one wall of our living room, with bookcases, presses ,TV unit and shelves. Total cost for that, plus a wardrobe in a boxroom was 1200. It was a really fantastic job done by a couple of Polish cabinetmakers. So I'd imagine for a smaller bookshelf, you'd be talking maybe 600-800eur?
PM me if you'd like their details....

Thanks as usual to posters on here - at least now I shouldn't get ripped off price wise.
I am based in Galway Dunners and assume you are in Dublin

We are getting three units done for our sitting room. They will be pine painted cream. Two bookcases and one big unit for the middle about the size you are seeking for €1800. There will be presses underneath and a display cabinet and drawers in the middle one. And locks on everything as we have small people in the house who love to empty drawers and presses. The people making ours have a showroom on the road from Ennis to Kilrush and have a shop before Lissycassy beside a big Spar or Centra shop. Sorry this is so vague.

They are due to arrive in a couple of weeks. If you are interested I could find out the name of the people but it totally slips my mind at the moment.

I do this type of work on a frequent basis and the prices I have seen quoted are just not correct for good craftsmanship.

If someone approached me and asked me to build them a good quality unit, built to last and spray painted to what ever colour they wanted. My prices would start from at least triple what has been quoted to you, but that as I said is quality, a good finish on it, sturdy, built to your own design and a joy to look at.

Furniture should be, not just good to look at but functional too.

Samhain,
Would be interested to have their details and let me know what you think of their workmanship.

SLF I am sure that your workmanship and materials are of highest quality but cost is an issue I assume for most people (why is IKEA so popular!) and there are times when you have to sacrifice something and in my case using more expensive materials would mean I could not get items made

why is IKEA so popular

IKEA might be popular but its obliviously not much use to you since they don't stock the size you want.

This is why people come to me to get their furniture custom made.
I can make it to suit any size, any fittings you choose, any space to be filled, any wood you choose, any colour you choose, any design you choose

and all for a reasonable price

try to get IKEA to do that.

I do hope you find the people you are looking for

Hi Webbs if you want the creme da la creme in bookshelve quaility use Tulip wood what a finish when handpainted but it is pricey Good luck painter man

Tulip wood commonly called Poplar is actually one of the cheaper hardwoods.. it is often used for painted work as it has green streaks.

I'd agree with SLF that the prices are misleading... for good work a cabinet eight foot wide by eight foot tall, fully fitted, with proper cabinet doors and correctly painted should be at least 1,500.

Of course it's possible to lash up a few shelves more quickly, leave the cabinet unfinished... make or buy doors from MDF rather than solid wood. Stick up trimming to cover all gaps. Leave screws, supports, nails etc exposed. Even still 500 to 600 is unrealistic in my informed opinion.

I'm actually amazed at the prices, mostly the threads are more along the lines of people asking is 25,000 too much for a solid wood kitchen! If you go to the top end cabinet makers they will quote 2,000 upwards for the OPs built in cabinet...

Cheers
Joe
