Radon remediation work - structurally okay?

I am planning to get some holes (about 6 in total at side, front and back of house) drilled into the plinth to help lower the radon level inside the house - passive vents will vent from under the house foundation. I am in Clare, and the person doing it says that such holes can not damage the structure of the house. Is it structurally sound to do this?

What diameter?

I would be interested to hear more about this method, and whether it is accepted as a good way of venting radon (sound plausible, and unless the 'holes' are very big it would not cause a structural problem).

I assume you would put vented covers on the holes to keep out rain, vermin etc?

I would have thought Clare would be high radon area with all the limestone, I think around Ennis especially. You can have very varying levels in an area, even if the house is new and the barrier is installed. I had levels of approx 800 in my house with no barrier and newer houses less than half a mile away with barrier installed had 1200. Unfortunately a lot of the barriers can be damaged when put in or at least that is the explanation given. I have even heard of cases where the outlet pipe from the sump was there but the builder had put in no barrier, whos to know when the house is finished? Had to have mine rectified several years ago, did not come across the method you mentioned but as my house predated barriers maybe it wouldnt have been possible. Mind you I only had to have one hole dug down through path and pipe and fan put in.

Can you give a little more info on the construction and age of the house.

Does it have a suspended timber floor or are you proposing to drill underneath the slab?

Have you thought about possible damage to dpm, radon membrane and any services or drainage that might be under the slab.

Who is offering to do this job - I would be interested to hear more about the method and the theory behind it ?

If the diameter is small I don't forsee a structural problem

About 50 year old house, holes to go under the side of the house - under the concrete slab. Install small duct, have a vent, the idea is that the radon gas passively vents out. If it doesnt work, you can install a fan. It is a common enough procedure (According to the RPII). I was just wondering if such work could affect foundation?
