Supervision of "Self" Build

I have FPP to build a dormer bungalow. The engineers/planning consultants who designed the house and progressed the application also provide a "supervision" / compliance" service through the build process.

My experience with them during the design/permission phase was pretty positive and I am considering moving onto the build phase.

What exactly should I be expecting from them in the next phase; eg in terms of the communication triangle between them, myself and the builder? Also, in terms of keeping an eye on costs?
I will not be able to monitor the build closely myself.
Just looking for some pointers as I hope to have a preliminary discussion with them end of May.

there are usually two different engagements at this stage.

the first would be a basic 'inspections' engagement where the engineer / architect would visit the site at 5 or 6 predetermined stages to 'sign off' each stage in order to release money for mortgage purposes and to be able to prepare compliance certificates on completion. This engagement doesnt have any kind of 'supervision' role, and the architect / engineer can only comment on the compliance of the build with planning permission and building regulations. expect to pay between 1.5 - 2.5 k for this service.

the second engagement would be in a 'supervisionry' role. Again at predetermined times, probably one site meeting a week. In this engagement, the architect / engineers role is everything mentioned above, plus to ensure the smooth running of the build, ensure best practises and workmanship is adhered to, and to be available for 'trouble-shooting' if needed. there is a lot more communications between client - architect - builder with this engagement. obviously this costs a lot more than the first, perhaps in the area of 1.5 - 2% of construction costs.

Thanks for the concise advice. It gives me a good guideline for my next discussion with the architect.

- what if the engineer/architect provides a detailed spec, construction dwgs, BOQ.....what would be the rough cost on this together with a supervision role, in terms of a percentage of build costs?

assume a fee for a full service ranges (including planning etc) from between 8% and 12% of the construction cost of the project.....
