Hi,

a friend of mine was rejected for a laser card application, i couldnt believe it. How is that possible?
she doesnt have a bad credit but is a non national.I always thought that was a mere formality

How long is her current account open, while it doesn't make any sense i believe there is a waiting period on a new account...

hi
its open about 3 months i think, they didnt say why they rejected only a letter saying not approved

Get her to talk to the manager in the branch she opened her account. I had an AIB account for 10 years, and when I asked for a cheque book I was refused. I rang my manager and she was embarrassed that I'd been refused and issued it straight away.

The OH also had an issue getting credit cards etc. because their a/c was only open a number of months. He told them he'd move to to a different bank that had already approved him for a credit card. The bank responded by giving him a creditcard and cheque book.

When I was new to the country the bank would only give me a pass card and told me it would be 12 months before I'd get a laser. After about 8 months I charged into the bank, put the pass card on the counter and requested, very firmly, a laser card. After asking my reasons (living five miles from nearest reliable cash point) someone in the bank got it "signed off" and my application was approved. It certainly seemed to help going into the branh and speaking to someone.

PTSB bury themselves in paperwork when you apply for a Laser. The form is about 10 pages long. Its a joke.

They seem to view it as if youre asking for credit !! I applied 2 years ago after being a customer for over 10 years. 2 weeks later got refused. Reason was 5 years prior to applying 1 direct debit payment was returned due to insufficient funds. What a load of rubbish !!

Wake up guys. I want to take out my own money. Went to AIB and had my Laser in 2 days !

According to IPSO, the use of cheques and cash is costing the country billions as they are supposidly more inefficient then electronic payments and as an industry the banks are supposed to be driving down the use of paper and driving up the use of plastic and electronic payments!!!!!!

Get your friend to re-read the application or to talk to the bank to confirm what was applied for. The issue is probably the cheque guarantee that is normally included in a laser card - because it guarantees payment of cheques up to €100 it has to go through a credit check.

She might be able to ask the bank for a laser card without the cheque guarantee included.

My mother in law was trying to open a current account with PTSB mainly in order to use an ATM/Laser card and was also told that it would take several months before she could be approved. Sounds stupid to me too. Maybe what efm says is pertinent - i.e. that they always or by default include a cheque guarantee function and this causes the delay?!

thanks,

i just thought it completely ridiculous, because in countries like estonia they insist you take a laser card because its far more efficient for the bank and the customer. And it was PTSB, its really illogical.

I am sure Blackhorse B meant the Estonian version of laser eg visa debit or maestro.

AIB Laser cards are no longer cheque guarantee cards. They have no problem giving them to new customers.

I agree there, i have a laser card with AIB and received this no problem when i opened a second account with them a few months ago...
