Hi

I'm heading to Japan next month and I want to purchase a two week Japan rail pass. This should cost €285, but the two providers in Ireland (AWL Travel & Trailfinders) are charging €340. The extra cost is the 'booking fee*'. Does anyone know an alternative UK or on-line travel agency where I could purchase this ticket cheaper? Thanks.

*trailfinders waives their fee if you book the flight with them

Can you not purchase when you arrive there? I didn't purchase a rail pass as such when I was there, but had to buy loads of train tickets for different routes. This site should tell you more info - http://www.japanrailpass.net/

If you're doing a lot of travelling by rail in Japan, the Japanese Rail Pass is the most economical way of doing it

Is it possible to get one in London on your way ? (Presuming that you're going via London...). the choice of agencies there is much better than in Ireland

not much help now I know, but I know when I bought japanese rail pass, the cheapest place was from this tiny little office in a building on dawson street dublin kind of opposite trailfinders, sorry I can't be anymore specific, will try and remember name of place it i can or how I even found that place, it wasn;t like a travel agency but sold the tickets and had lots of other stuff on japan

rail pass definitely a lot cheaper if you are going to do a lot of travelling and train system over there is great for getting around,

Gianni,
Travelling via Paris so London is out.

I checked the price with a few UK travel agents and it looks possible to buy it for ~ €40 cheaper. However, as I'm heading in two weeks time and knowing how slow mail arrives from the UK , I'm going to purchase it from AWL Travel for peace of mind.

I know it's too late but in case anyone else reads this. I bought my Japan rail pass from Japan Ireland Travel - located on Herbert Street, D2. They charged 10% service charge. The total for 14 days was 295 euro. Depends on the daily rate of exchange. Yen is cheap now so good time to buy! They have lots of information on Japan too....!!
