Looking into soucing stairs at the momemnt.
What type of wood is most commonly used & how much would an average stairs for a 3000 sq foot house cost?
One guy who came to look said go for red deal stairs - whic h would cost about €7,000, he said solid oak would be twice the price.

If you pay €7000 for red deal stairs, I'll come up there & box you, on general principle! (kidding, of course)

Price will depend on several things, like are there any turns in the stairs, how much balcony rail will you need etc. But don't expect to pay any more than 3k for red deal stairs.
If you want something nicer, oak is lovely, but it is expensive.
Ash looks pretty well too for a price somewhere in between deal & oak.

You can also mix & match, that's getting popular - maybe red deal or ash strings with walnut handrails. Just don't ask that guy for a quote!

Thanks, the guy is ringing me back tonight with a firm price- so i`ll know for sure then.
(he is the builders stair guy, price of stairs was in the original quote - though amount not specified)
I may get some other quotes also.

Wouldn't surprise me at all, Joey.
I know a few local builders whose prices are very much based on what they think the customer can afford.

I know a painter who once told me many moons ago that he priced job's by the length of the driveway and the number of chimneys on the house (and he was'nt kidding either)

Stairs price sounds crazy unless something very unusual about it - as mentioned before Max €3000 for red deal stairs including all handrail, newels etc fitted.

Both ash and oak are very very nice. Worth spending a few bob on a stairs, its a piece of furniture which would be very expensive to change in a few years time not like a hallstand. Its a lifetime investment.

Cut String is lovely but does not look great on a Red Deal stairs. Really depends on the style of the house.

You should be able to get white oak for around €5k . I got them for under that, last summer. Joinery shop is in Blackwater, Wexford if thats any good to you.

standard deal stairs approx €3K

standard oak stair approx €5K

Curved HW stairs approx €10K - €12K

thanks for all that - the stairs is being supplemented with railings at the top - its a walk around area at the top, perhaps this is adding to his cost.

Gallery rails, spindles, handrails, base rails, could not possibly make a huge difference in stair prices unless its an extremely large gallery. Stair prices tend to include enough hand rail , base rail, and balustrades to complete one half of the stair footprint at first floor level.

Deal stairs ,mdf treads, about 2.5 k fitted.
Oak, Ash, about 6.5k
Curved Oak, Ash, Mahogany, handrails, gallery, cut string, 20k plus fitted..

Sorry to but in and show my ignorance, what is red deal? am interested in doing new banisters but have not heard this term before

Red Deal is part of the pine species. It is a softwood, so as the name suggestsm marks easily if it gets a bang or stilletto heels etc. Its beautiful varnished to get the rustic look.
