Thinking of taking a holiday in Thailand any ideas of locations suitable for a family holiday? Looking for a relatively quiet spot with good restaurants

Re: thailand

I would recommend Hua Hin as a family destination, not as sleazy as other resorts (avoid pattaya!!). Bangkok is great fun for a couple of days but it depends on the age of your kids.

I'd second that but perhaps max a week in Hua Hin, then further down the coast to Chumpton to get the boat out to Ko Tao for the island life.

Alternative fly into Phuket so that you are in position to get to Phi Phi (couple of days) then on to beaches west of Krabi namely Rai Leh and Ao Nang.

A lot depends on your definition of good restaurant. The best restaurant I came across in Thailand was under the flight path on Ko Samui and it was an open air plastic chair job. Red and green curries to die for.

I too was thinking of heading to Thailand in July for around 3 weeks. Can anyone advise what is the best way to travel - are you better off booking through a travel agent and arranging your itinerary with them or is it easy enough to find your way around if you book a flight in to Bangkok for instance and take it from there? It will just be a teenager and myself travelling and we're no strangers to travelling around.

Do it independently. We saved about 1000 euro this way between myself and mrs niallers.

ethihad airways. go to Ko samui and chang mai. internal flights are cheap. fab country.

You can get to Bangkok direct with China Airlines from Amsterdam, Air France from Paris and Thai Airlines from London. I think Ethihad stop in Dubai, so you've 2 medium flights rather than a short hop and then long haul, which would be my preference so to get in a longer sleep.

Chiang Mai I found dull and hot beyond the cultural stuff and a elephant ride. The markets in Bangkok are better. There are only so many Temples you can get excited about in one day... but its a good base if you're into doing over night treks into the rainforest etc.

The Islands are definately worth a visit IMO. Chaweng Beach in Ko Samui, I was disappointed with. Very very commercial. It was a bit like the the Canaries. 24 hour Mc Donalds, Burger King, Irish bars, Scotish bars etc, was not the island paradise the travel agent made us expect, but all of Samui is not all like that.

Koh Tao and Phangan are worth a visit. Alot less commercial, cheaper and have good snorkelling/diving.

It should be easy organise it yourself.

We flew internally with Bangkok Air, who were great.

Phi Phi and Krabi are meant to be good too from what I've heard, but I haven't been
