i wonder are many people confused by all the various stories about health especially in u.k. media. one day wine is good and another day it is bad. yesterday it was reported a daily cup of coffee may halt Alzheimers. what really fuelled me to raise this issue was another report yesterday that the health 'myth' of having eight glasses of water a day..is dismissed. i am waiting for someone to say that exercise is bad!!

I hear this a lot but I think it's a red herring. Either the media's portrayal of the results of scientific surveys or the publics interpretation.

For instance the wine claims. The recent findings showed that 1 glass a day had positive health benefits however more than that had negative impact (everything in moderation). However depending on where you get your news this can be reported as booze is good for you; Joe Public starts complaining that last week some scientists were telling him that drink was bad etc... A lot of these findings are pretty nuanced and detailed, however stories like that don't make the headlines hence you get these black and white reporting x is good for you y is bad etc...

As for exercise being bad for you.... well I think there is no doubt that moderate exercise is good for you however running a marathon every week probably isn't. Is that a surprise to anyone?

Health stories in the media are there to sell newspapers, not to inform you about your health. Just take everything in moderation. Anything else is too stressful.

Hope you are all checking your breasts/testicles/ stools (that's s**t) on a regular basis!

(PS that 8 glasses water was a myth started by the misinterpretation by the media of a scientific study - they then just kept repeating it without checking the original source until it became a truism)
