is there any such thing? i just asked my builder and he never heard of a stove that runs on oil & solid fuels. we`re looking to have a stove toheat our main stting room.
(not a cooker - a stove that works off oil & wood/coal)

The more expensive stoves tend to incorporate more technology like secondary hot air combustion that reduces the amount of fuel needed and thermostatic controls. Brands such as Charnwood,Esse, Dunsley and Jotul are not like Stanley now made in China and do stoves of 13 kw plus room output incorporating 8 plus kw back boilers.
The more contemporay styles are not so large and as a rule will drive around 7 or 8 rads whereas traditional larger stoves will service 10 or more.
This for example is a high end quality stove.

The single most important factor in installing a stove with boiler is to ensure that the plumber is fully familiar with installing the system or the results will be negated.

You can get stand alone solid fuel boilers, though how practical theese would be in comparison to oil is debateable, unless of course you have an endless supply of free fuel
