I'm hoping somene can help with this - I'm at my wit's end.

OH is constantly complaining about the the 'stink' from the master bedroom - the one with the tiny ensuite - and refuses to sleep in it. I have noticed a strong sort of musty smell in the room if the windows are not open, but he's very sensitive to smells.

I've scrubbed everywhere, put in plug in air freshners and we're getting new carpet down soon and a new bed.

Could this smell be anything to do with the plumbing?

I honestly cant trace where this smell is coming from. The carpet is down since 1995 so long overdue for a change.

Any suggestions would be very welcome...before a divorce is on the cards!!

Re: Smelle from bedroom with ensuite

Hi do you actually use the ensuite at all? I dont use mine and there was a smell coming out of it for ages. I rang plumber and he told me to run the water in the shower and sink and flush the toilet everynow and again even if your not using them. The smell cleared up after a week.

Re: Smelle from bedroom with ensuite

Have your drains been cleaned lately, this may need doing, also pour strong ammonia solution down the drains and sink holes and leave overnight. It is possible that drain / sewer smells are being blown back up the pipes in windy conditions.

Hope that helps

No need to use strong chemicals, if its dry u-bends or water traps, this will do the trick and ensure you have adequate air circulation in the rooms.

Re: Smelle from bedroom with ensuite

Check the sewer pipe coming out of ensuite. Does it have a vent on it. If not flushing the toilet could be siphoning the water from the ubends in sinks, showers, baths etc.

Re: Smelle from bedroom with ensuite

Funny story - same problem with a member of my family, his poor wife spent ages cleaning the bathroom, his over-sensitive nose still had a problem with the smell, she scrubbed again...turns out...it was a new bar of soap which for some reason drove him mad...soap gone, smell gone..all happy again.

Re: Smelle from bedroom with ensuite

Thanks everyone.

The toilet is in use every day, Klesser, so that wouldn't seem to be it.

Tormented - when you say drains and sink holes, do you mean the drain covers outside the house (3 bed semi)? Sorry I have no clue about plumbing at all - nor has OH for that matter. I suppose I could get ammonia in Woodie's? And what does having the drains cleaned involve? They've never been done - are we talking big money?

Ted - where would I find the sewer pipe coming out of the ensuite? And if it doesnt have a vent in it is this a costly job to have fixed? Money is tight at the moment.

Wishbone - only wish it was something as simple as soap! I've changed every blessed washing article in that ensuite, which also has a tiny shower, and poured bottles of bleach into the loo and shower drain!

Re: Smelle from bedroom with ensuite

The sewer pipe would probably come out the wall just behid the toilet 110 mm. You would see smaller pipes connecting in to it from bath, shower and sink depending what you have in the ensuite. Compare the sewer pipe to the one from the main bathroom. one will have the pipe extended upwards with a vent on top.

Re: Smelle from bedroom with ensuite

Thanks Ted, will check when I get home - skiving in work at the moment.

The house was built in 1995 so you'd think it'd be up to scratch. Theres only a toilet, small shower and sink in the ensuite.

Will it be costly to fix if there isnt a vent? And if there is, can I do anything to make sure it's not blocked?

Help! Can anyone answer my questions please??

I'm nort sure what my next step should be.

Thanks a mil.

No it shouldn't cost a lot to add a vent to a sewer pipe. If that's the problem

a vent not a major job has to be taken from pipe waste goes down from toliet,d vent can be taken up through attic and out through a special roof tile, this shud have been done when ensuite was installed. or change pipe under sink for a deeper u shape this holds more water so smell cant get through as easy

If you have a ceiling fan extractor - It could also be caused by water in the piping going stagnant/musty/mouldy, caused either due to rain ingress or condensation.
Bring in a chair/ladder and see if the smell is stronger from the extractor vent.

Has the OH tried anything? I'd get him in there investigating and scubbing if necessary...Sounds like he is complaining and you are stressing!
