A member of my family has a 1.4 ltr car and wants to get insurance on it.

However I have payed half of the total cost of the car and will also want to get insurance on it (which will be both of us with learner permits).

1.) Considering her current possession of her permit, If she applies for insurance for herself now and recieves it for herself, can I then get joint insurance with her (on the same car) in time when I get my learner permit?

2.) Also do I need to be a named driver and/or registered co-owner of the car before I can get insured? - If so how is this accomplished?

I am not familiar with vehicles being registered with co-owners in this jurisdiction. Is the vehicle currently registered in either of your names?

With both of you seeking your first insurance and both of you (eventually) having learner's licences, the choice of a 1.4 ltr vehicle was a poor one IMO, as insurance companies will load premia once a vehicle exceeds 1.0 ltr. and some may not be willing to quote competitively.

1) If your female relative has a learner's licence, then she can get insurance on the vehicle if she is the registered owner of the vehicle. If she is not the registered owner of the vehicle, legally she has no insurable interest and therefore cannot take out insurance. She may get comprehensive insurance on the vehicle if she shops around, but it is likely to be expensive, and again this may vary from insurer to insurer.

2) You would really be better of waiting until your female relative has a full licence. Once you have a learner's licence, your female relative applies to have you added to the insurance as a named driver, but you will only have 3rd party cover.

The usual endorsements will apply - you must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver at all times, your vehicle must display L-plates front and rear, and you must not drive on motorways, etc.

HTH (All of the above subject to correction)

I don’t see why not, just be aware that the insurance will be loaded by the higher risk driver, which wee be you assuming your male.

Quite simple really.
She gets the insurance in her name as she is the registered owner and you are put as a named driver.

Isn't that assuming I have my learner permit licence already?

Or do you mean she can go ahead and get the insurance with me as a named driver right away, even though i'm waiting to do my theory test (and do not yet possess a permit)? - If you see what I mean?

As per my original post above..you need a licence to be included on an insurance policy to drive a vehicle.
