I am travelling to Australia in July and staying until the end of August. My passport is valid until March 10 2009 - would you recommend getting a new passport or will this one suffice.

Also can you renew your passport even when it is not out of date for another year?

You can easily renew your passport by claiming that your old one is lost, and fill in the appropriate part on the application form. Send in your birth cert with the application.

This is a really bad idea. Its making a false declaration on the loss of an official document. Its totally unnnecessary in this case and its just telling lies. Also if the OP were to genuinely lose their replacement passport they could find themselves being issued with 1 year passports. The Passport office do this to habitual passport losers.

OP why would you need to replace your passport given that it will remain valid for a considerable period after you return?

You can renew your passport even though it is still valid for another year- done it myself a few weeks ago.

Different countries have differing policies on the validity of visitor's passports - most notably the US who require that your passport is valid for at least 6 months (?) after your proposed length of visit. If travelling to Spain, your passport can expire the day you leave.

OP, phone the Australian embassy if this is the sort of thing that is worrying you - they can confirm/advise.

Mentions here that your 10 year passport must be valid for 6 months after your scheduled return date.

So check your dates carefully, you might be just inside the 6 months.
How so? The original poster returns in August and the passport is valid until March so September-February is 6 months.

not the case for Irish or UK nationals. US has a special arrangement. I travelled to the US in November, my passport was out in December. The passport just needs to cover the duration of the stay.

Fair enough Batty - went myself in 2001 though and I'm fairly sure my passport validity had to extend well beyond my stay?! Maybe I'm wrong...

Have you considered contacting the Passport Office?

Or do you merely prefer the off-the-cuff opinions of anonymous posters who may, or may not, know what they're talking about?

I'm in a similar situation; travelling to the US in April and passport is expiring in July.

This link indicates that your passport must be valid for 6 months after your return from the States:

The exemptions to this rule link leads to this document:

The heading is not very clear but it seems to back up what batty is saying. Most of the countries of the world actually appear to be exempt.

I think I'll check with the passport office, hopefully they'll know for sure.

Finally found this:

The visa waiver programme allows you to visit for up to 90 days and you can enter the States as long as your passport is still valid on your return.
