Hotel recommendations in Cuzco

[Perplexed]

Some of you guys were great with info re the Inca Trail so I'm now looking for recommendations for a hotel in Cuzco.

I'm totally confused reading up on hostals & hotels & prices range so much. A few hours of Tripadvisor & I'm no wiser so personal recommendations would be really welcome.......I trust the posters here more !

I stayed in El Balcon in 2003, central Cusco, beautiful hostel, not a hotel but a step up from ordinary hostels, reasonably priced, lovely rooms and grounds. Nice breakfasts too, the staff were good and kept our bags while we did the trail. Am very happy to recommend it. They will come and collect you from the Airport too if you book ahead.

Somewhat in between really. Once it's clean & comfortable it doesn't have to be 5* but not too basic either.

It's just that from reading reviews a lot of places seem to have rather dodgy electric showers. Peru "Footprint" warns about this. Also some places don't seem to have heating & it does seem to get cold at night.
