fitting a sensor light

I have been quoted 250 euro for the supply and installation of a sensor light over the main entrance door in my elderly mother's house. Is this a bit steep or should I expect to pay this amount?

Is the power cable already installed such that the light just needs to be wired in? If so then €250 sounds very steep to me.

for what its worth-we recently bought a sensor light for 40-50 euro for the front of our house. We already had a porch light in place so the issue of where the power was to come from wasnt there. My father installed the sensor light to the front of the house which when activated also turns on the one in the porch. I have no idea how much we would have paid a handy man to do this job but at 250euro I'm thinking that itself would have scared me into trying to do the job ourselves. Personally I think it sounds pricey.

Olivia,

my elderly mother (she'd kill me if she knew i refered to her as such!) had a light and sensor put over her front door FOC. She lives alone and is in the SDCC area. She's not sure who actually pays for this is it a local auth. thing or social welfare. It might be worth contacting your local auth/social welfare/local aged groups? for info. She would probably need to be over 65 and living alone to receive it.

The work was completed in 2 hours and light and sensor would cost approx 70. So 250 seems a little too high anyhow.

Age Action Ireland also provide a free small DIY/odd jobs service to some or all elderly people. They also provide a service whereby elderly people can get a rough idea of a reasonable quote for a specific job so that they don't end up paying through the nose for it when they get somebody out. Give them a shout and ask them about these services.

I bought two sensor lights last weekend. One at Aldi: 500w included - price E9.99 and the other at B&Q for about E13. The reason I had to get one at B&Q was colour matching. Connections already in place so each one took about 20 mins. BUT, if I had to draw cable from an awkward part of the building, drill through a 20" stone wall, maybe have to go into the fuse box etc ....... then the time mounts up - as does the charge.

With regard to my earlier response have spoken to my mother about her light. It seems she got this and panic alarm set up for around 50 euro and then pays an annual fee to this company for monitoring. The amount of the annual fee I cannot tell you but the company is called Emergency Response. I cannot say that i could recommend them as she only had it done and I have not read contract she had to sign. They have a website and might be worth you giving them a call.

Well given a Steinel fitting (one of the best) will cost < € 25.00 and fitting will take 30 mins say € 30.00, I would think € 250 is outrageous. Even allowing for a call out of € 60.00 there should be change out of € 150.00!!

€250 is a total rip off.A good brand of light will cost around €30 at the most and any electrician shoould install it in under a hour if he is any good.€220 for one hours work what a joke ...bet it was in Dublin

Was this a combined light & sensor? If so its too much
But there are seperate units & lights that would be more expensive

how can you be sure it would be installed in under an hour? we have no idea where the fuseboard is and if the wiring was not up to scratch he would have to go back to it rather than come off an existing circuit. ok, in most situations €250 may be a lot but maybe its not just a straight forward job???

You can buy a sensor fitting for less than €10 but they will invariably be terrible quality. A good quality steinel will cost around €60.

In fairness nobody can say how long the job will take or what exactly is involved, but €250 is probably a quote which would be enough to cover all eventualities; worst case being having to run a new circuit back to the fuseboard. So if I had to quote you over the phone, didn't know exactly what was involved and wanted to make sure I was covered, €250 wouldn't be far off the mark.

Glad I got someone I know to install ours so! At that price I'd be expecting 'all eventualities' to include my dinner!!!!

Thanks for the clarification Cooper!lol!

You have indeed provided some very important advice there.
