NIB - anybody else experience problems banking with them?

My missus joined NIB a few years ago and I have to say she has nothing but problems- they are terrible. She has asked 5 times to get a Standing order increased and it has not been done. One time they charged her over €100 in charges without prior warning/call letter which put her overdrawn.
They have very few atm machines - there is one not far away. She went there last month and the machine took her card. She rang striaght away they said they would send a replacement card straight away. It took over 2 weeks to get a replacement card and due to them having so few branches it is a big trek to get her money out.
Anyway she gets a new card, puts it into an NIB machine last friday and it gets taken again  Rings again and says there is a fault in their machine again and will order another card so more treks miles away to get money out.
Anyone else had similar problems?

Re: NIB- Dreadful bank!

I have been with them for 10 years....found them to be grand...no hassles ever. Have over the years had mortgage, share trading, current account, credit cards etc never any delays or cause for complaint.

Re: NIB- Dreadful bank!

That's surprising...I've had an account with them for a while and had no issues. Why does she have to use an NIB ATM machine? Also, it's normal to get notification of charges to be applied to your account-what were these charges?

Re: NIB- Dreadful bank!

Have to say I'm with them for years and have never had a problem. They may have been a little technologically lethargic in the past but the Internet Banking on offer today is excellent.

She has to use their machine to get the balance on her a/c does that justify the card been taken twice?
It maybe normal but it did not happen

Re: NIB - problems with ATM card

I have changed the thread title since it was misleading.

What were the charges? Of course a card shouldn't be swallowed up but does she have access to internet/phone banking?

They were the usual bank charges I was not saying they were not probally due - when we rang up they admitted it was there error and they should have informed her so at least she would have money to meet it there!
It took 6 months of constant calls before she got a cirrus/maestro card. Do they do internet/phone banking she has never been informed and she would have very limited access to either. Their machine is handy for her - anyway she is now going to leave them.
I have my account with another bank for 15 odd years hassle free.

Have to say that I've had the opposite experience with NIB, nothing but good. I was tempted to leave a few years ago because their online banking was non-existent but with the takeover by Danske Bank this has improved immeasurably.

I transferred my mortgage to them last year and just transferred my Visa account this week. I would recommend that you talk to someone in your local branch as they seem to be big into assigning 'personal bankers' at the moment and request that they provide a full list of services and costs. They have rejigged all of their accounts and their is a very good chance that one of the 'free banking' options might suit you.

By the way I have no connection with NIB other than being a very satisfied customer.

Good Luck.

Re: NIB- Dreadful bank!

I find that very hard to believe and it makes me sceptical about the accuracy of other aspects of this story.

Do you work for NIB as I said also she is would have very little access to internet/phone banking. Why other aspect do you find hard to believe?

that somebody doesn't know whether a bank provides internet/phone banking in Ireland in 2008. I find this hard to believe.
and I do not work for NIB.

Do I have to state again which bit of she does not really have access to the internet/phone do you not understand? Internet/phone banking is not really an issue was that in my original post - please point it out????
Sorry can you get money out over the phone/internet my smart friend does this resolve the issue?;)

I have outlined the issues - card was swallowed twice in 6 weeks at an NIB machine and have given you the other reasons

Maybe she simply got her PIN wrong more than three times or whatever it takes for a card to be swallowed by the ATM?

Nope the machine had swallowed a few cards that day the bank said there was a fault with the machine when she rang them.

Why doesn't she put her complaints to them formally in writing on the various issues and see what happens? If she gets no satisfaction then she can get a final response letter and take the matter to the [broken link removed] if necessary.

You asked "Do they do internet/phone banking as she has never been informed". That is the bit I have the issue with, and it makes me sceptical about the other issues. Equally, who in this day and age doesn't have access to a phone never mind the internet? Also, in this post above you ask "can you get money out over the phone/internet" which is fair enough, but you don't have to go specifically to an NIB machine to do it either. Having to drive specifically to an NIB machine just to check a balance seems like a waste of time. Why did she switch to NIB in the first place if their small number of branches and ATM machines was going to be an issue? Regarding the card, have you looked at other possibilities? Where does she keep the cards? Is she damaging them as this usually the reason a card is swallowed/gets stuck? To lose one card is bad luck but to lose two is a bit too odd.

It is hard enough to get her to use/answer her mobile phone never mind use phone banking/internet.
NIB machine is beside my daughters school so it is handy when she picks her up. She did not switch to NIB- she is not Irish (ozzie) . NIB at the time was owned by the National Australia Bank (sold in Dec 2004 to Danske bank). She knew National bank in Oz so that was one reason she joined plus when she was opening an account there was no queue at the NIB branch!! Believe you me I questioned why she joined them as well.
She holds her card in purse/wallet like most people I reckon. I hold my card in my wallet which gets bashed around a bit yet have never had my card swallowed? Bank has admitted there was a fault with the machine

Fair enough. She should look into switching to one of their "free" accounts for which there are no fees. And try and get her to use internet/telephone banking so she can check her balance without having to find an NIB machine (which are thin on the ground!) There were teething problems when Danske purchased them and they invested a lot in new systems. I find them good, cheap mortgage, decent credit card rates etc. The cards shouldn't have been swallowed but it does sound like bad luck. And bad luck for you because you're probably bearing the brunt of it!!!
