How do chargebacks work on credit cards?

I have a hotel room booked but they said if I cancel it they are charging me for the entire stay which is £300. I dont think I am gonna be able to go now but there is no way they are charging me that when I am not even staying. What would be the best way to handle this?

There are loads of rooms left for the dates I am staying so I dont see why they are charging for cancelled bookings. It is months away too.

Would I be better off cancelling my credit card and ordering a new one with a different number?

There is no set policy. I went to book the same dates I am staying and it doesnt have one. But on my confirmation email it has if I cancel I will be fully charged.

Sounds like you agreed to non refund of payment if you cancel so? What website is it? I would be surprised if you got a refund or were entitled to one. I would also be surprised if the credit card provider agreed to doing a chargeback in this situation. The fact that there are vacancies available is irrelevant to your booking and your wish to cancel it.

Surely they should have it spelled out up ftont what the cancellation policy is and not on a confirmation email AFTER you book?

When were you travelling? If it is close to the the date I would understand why they would charge, usually you can cancel up to 72 hours beforehand.

Get on to the local homeless persons hostel or Salvation Army.

I'm sure they would be more than happy to supply a couple of bodies to use the hotel if it is fully paid for and the hotel refused to play ball tp play ball.

all the hotels I used in the past year had the same conditions. free cancellation up to 48 hours and 1 nights accommodation charged for if cancelled after that. I actually had to cancel one in December on either a Monday or Tuesday for Saturday night and no charge. As per CM what was the website?

That's standard practice with hotels. If you book through one of the hotel booking sites its a different story. They usually have different terms and conditions. Worth checking carefully before booking.
