Hi all. Was wondering what the procedure is for bringing a car in from the UK? If the car is say €20,000, how much do you have to pay to clear it? Does it depend on the year, or the engine size? Also, does the same apply to up north?
Thanks in advance

i'm doing same as you so to save you loads of reading, yes to the north same as UK. Its the vrt and thats the killer and you have to pay within 2 days of arriving, to work out vrt go here. Nb VRT rates change from 1 july and in my case if I could have waited rate goes from 30% to 24%.

https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/showVRT

click on the prompts and hey presto you get the amount of vrt. Your own insurance will insure the car with the UK reg.

use autotrader to search for a car. I like mondeos so I have a big choice.

good luck

To work out the VRT online from the above link, do you need to ring the garage directly to get those details...ie when was the car for registered etc..

Hi all,
I just noticed your post on buying a UK reg car. From my own experience, my advice is be very very careful if buying in the North or UK. I bought my car 2 years ago at a reputable garage and it was a Uk import, last week I went to trade in my car, only to find out that my car had been clocked. The garage I was going to trade in my car to had a system in place where they always trace the car reg nos of cars they intend to take as a trade in. I can tell you it was a shock to find out.In 2005 in the UK there had been 88,000mls on the clock and when I bought it in 2006 there was 55,000.Make sure there is a FSH with your car before purchasing.C.C

HPI check will guarantee mileage and history. It's unwise in the extreme not to
pay for one.
