How long to paint a 4 bed semi?

I have searched the previous threads and can't find the answer to this. Our house 1700 sq ft , after the extension is complete, will need painting inside and out including all doors and windows, approx 400 sq ft of the house will be new skimmed walls. Any idea how long a professional painter would take to do this? and also how much it might cost

and allow two weeks at it full time, the weather this time of year is against you though.

If you have pebble dash on the outside it can be time consuming....also requires a good bit of paint

It really depends on the experience of the painter and his staff. Also, how many people he will have on the job with him. If you need it done quickly, you will have to hire a painter with a big crew. Preferrably, get a recommended painter regardless of the size of the crew and time estimates. Not really the time of year to be painting the outside of a house. Paint mightn't dry and fuse properly in the current weather conditions. You should wait until the summer to get the outside done.

Thanks everyone for your replies, the house won't be ready for paint until May/June. I am just trying to plan ahead and coordinate the various bits so that we minimise the amount of time we are out of the house (we are renting during the building period). 2K seems very little for the inside and outside, given that all the windows doors and woodwork will need to be done in both the new extended and original part of the house. Philboy, one experienced painter is a neighbour and works with one other guy, and will probably do it so it would be a 2 man job. I would have thought 2-3 weeks, but really have no idea as usually we do painting ourselves but usually only one room at a time.

Painting inside and out with all woodwork would take one painter about 3 weeks, divide it down for a crew. 2000 is a dream price more like 5000.

Its very hard to estimate without seeing the actual house itself.

But here is a rough estimate
-----------------
Outside of House
-----------------
If the surface on the outside of the house was very rough, it would take longer than normal to paint and would consume more paint. If the house hasn't been painted before, it would also take slightly longer to paint and once again due to greater soakage, it would require more paint. For a 2 man job, you are talking roughly 4 days max.

----------------
Inside of House
----------------

Hard to estimate, extension with new plaster, will need sealing coat first then 2 coats on top of this. If ceilings in house aren't too bad, then 1 coat otherwise 2. woodwork is the time consuming part. this depends on what you want done, i.e. varnished/glossed etc... if the wood has been treated or does it need to be treated. Only by getting a painter to look at the house will you be able to get a true estimate of how long it would take. For a 2 man job you are talking about 8-10 days for the inside to be done to a good standard.

As for the price, i doubt €2k.

Philboy,
Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I very much doubt the 2K estimate as well, I think 5K is closer to the mark. Time is really the important factor at the moment as ideally I would like the inside completely finished before we move back in so I suppose we could get them to paint the inside first and them work on the outside when we have moved back in.

so ye are saying 5k for 2 people for 8 days work.

does a painter ear 2500 for 8 days work. im in the wrong job. dont forget the environment we are in, a lot of them are sitting at home these days

Just take a couple of days off work yourself and don't waste your time with cow-boys, that's what I did myself.

How could a charge of €2,000, never mind €5,000 be justified.

Rip off Ireland most definately.

i must say id recommed the same.i have a new house.1250 Sq feet. its painted inside but of course it would have to be done again cos they are cowboys and its all cream. im doing it myself. bit by bit . its not that bad hassle plus its something to be proud of when u have it done

Not sure about the outside of the house but we have a slightly (100 sq ft) larger house and to get it painted internally (including paint - colours and paint we chose ourselves) it cost us €3000. BUT they finished it in 3 days as there were about 6 of them. Not ALL painters are cowboys. Get a good recommendation from someone and it should work out fine. We felt the 3k was well worth it as we'd still be painting and wanted a neat finish (neither of us have ever painted before) so we went for the expensive, no hassle option!

Thanks for all the advice. Coola, philboy estimated 14 working days thats three weeks work for two people including insurance etc.
For those of you who recommend the DIY job if it takes 2 professionals 3 weeks to do the job, doing it ourselves would probably take 4 weeks ie 20 working days. So either we do it on weekends which working all day, sat and sun it would take about 3 months plus childcare costs, or we both take a month off work which would cost at least as much as a professional painter.
I with ailbhe on the no hastle option!

So if we all service our own cars, do our own accounts, repair our own pc's, write our own safety statements, paint our own houses, maybe remove the odd appendix , grow our own food, drill for water, that’s fine?
So what would you do with all the money you are saving?

2500 for 8 days for a painter, 40 euro an hour to the employer,

Van
Insurance
tax prsi levies
holiday pay

I would suggest that 55-65 an hour for qualified reputable painter would be nearer the norm.( That’s just me do a bit of my own accounting)
