Have a Halifax credit card that I just got in November. Did not cancel my previous cc at the time

After going through the whole rigmarole for applying I am fed up with their customer service ,or the lack of it, and the fact they don't have an on-line facility to see transactions

What I want to do now is cancel it

Do I have to still pay the Government stamp duty and if so would this stamp duty cover my other cc which I did not cancel or would I get hit twice

Really? I've been on to them several times in recent weeks and found them grand.

Yes - you will be charged the relevant SD (not sure if it will be €40 or the new rate of €30) on closing the account or on the 1st April whichever comes first. See [broken link removed] (not updated for Budget 2008 changes). If you are going to switch to another card provider instead then you need to get a letter from Halifax and use that to avoid a second SD charge for the same March-April annual period.
What if I change credit card or charge card accounts a number of times in the same accounting period?

After 2 April 2005 you may switch your account as much as you like and you will still only be charged tax on the original account, provided you obtain a Letter of Closure each time you close the account. The second and subsequent bank/card issuer will issue a Letter of Closure once it has proof that the duty has been paid on the first account.

It should be noted that a Letter of Closure is an important document as the Bank is only in a position to issue one original letter. On receipt of the letter the cardholder should store it in a secure place and pass it their new bank as quickly as possible to ensure they receive the exemption from double stamp duty.

I have been onto their customer service about 3 or four times querying payments asking what for the local currency so I can check it v my reciepts and each time they kept me on for ages and told me it will appear on statement. Its this and the fact they dont have the online facility is why I wish to cancel. They said this will be available soon.....?

So if I cancel this pay the €40 or €30 and revert back to my PTSB card which I had not cancelled and get a letter from Halifax I will / wont have to pay it again?

Thanks

Since you have the two cards on the go at the same time rather than switching (i.e. cancelling one and switching to a new one) you will be charged SD on both.
