Coffee maker with vacuum flask?

I got my husband a Russel Hobbs Cafe Torino coffee maker for Xmas (cost E65). Not wanting to hurt my feelings he only recently admitted to hating it after I tasted it myself and found it wanting.

Basically the thermos doesn't keep the coffee warm at all. Even though we go through the whole process of boiling water to heat the thermos before allowing the coffee to be filtered into the machine it doesn't maintain the warmth for anything more than 10mins and even at first pouring it's cooler than the ordinary perculator with the heated pat under it.

Anyone have any views about this? Is this normal?

I phoned the shop and they said I could exchange it if it's faulty (which I said it was), but I'm wondering whether it's the whole thermos concept that's faulty?

Can I get another coffee machine in the shop for a lesser value? Husband would rather the old fashioned hotplate (although it can make the coffee a little bitter if left awhile)

Sale of goods 1980 act states 'If goods are not of merchantable quality or are not fit for their purpose or are not as described the customer is entitled to a remedy.

If the reason for the complaint is not trivial and is discovered soon after purchase, the customer is entitled to reject the goods and insist on a full refund provided prompt action is taken'

Hope this helps

Thanks Black Sheep, will tell that to the shop manager. Hope it works.

Have lost faith in the thermos type coffee machines - if I don't find a suitable alternative in the shop will try for a full refund - will need a refund of sorts as I imagine that what we'll go for will be less in value.

A good friend had the same problem with the thermos type (not sure of the brand). Mind you he got it because he had the hot plate type and it didn't keep the coffee hot enough either.

I thought that the customer was entitled to a repair, replacement or a refund? See www.consumerconnect.ie

Absolutely right Clubman! but as the OP has lost faith in vacuum coffee makers it is unlikely she would be interested in repair or replacement. I was simply pointing out that this may be the final option.

I have a Krupps Aroma Control Coffee maker with vacuum flask and find it excellent!

I always scald the flask with boiling water before brewing and ensure that the lid is tightly secured. I keeps the coffee hot for about an hour and a half.

Personally I dont like the hot plate coffee maker as I find that imparts a burned taste to the coffee.

I find the filter mechanism of the Krupps Aroma Control Coffee maker to be fussy and fiddly and difficult to clean.

My previous coffee maker (a russell hobbs I think) never heated the coffee properly.

ajapale,

An hour and a half is excellent! Interesting that you had the same problem with your previous machine - a Russell hobbs.

Husband was thinking of just getting a plunger machine instead - coffee tastes great but disadvantage is there will be no seconds this way, it'll definitely be cold!

The Krupps sounds good - am tempted to give it a go. Will see if the shop has them.

Have resolved not to except a straight exchange for another Russel Hobbs - as far as I'm concerned it does not do what it says it will.

I'll be quoting the 1980 act like a demented woman!

We went through the same problems of keeping coffee hot. I got a Morphy Richards Coffee Percolator Model No. 47430 about 10 years ago in Roches Stores (alas, no more!). It doesn't make espresso, but, makes about 10 cups of great coffee. Very handy if I'm working from home. You can tailor the strength to suit your tastes. Great for late night Irish and Baileys Coffees! I don't know whether this model is still being made. Bewleys grind the beans to the necessary standard, though a friend in Seattle keeps us regularly supplied too.

carpedeum ,

that sounds good - will keep an eye out for that or similar.

Went back to the shop - Homestore - and have to say was pleased with their attitude.

I hadn't realised that their returns policy just covers 14 days - had assumed it was a month. I went back after nearly a month and plainly said that the machine didn't fufil it's purpose (thermos didn't keep coffee hot). I didn't ask for a refund because I also had my eye on a couple of other things in the shop. So was offered an exchange without any quibble at all - even though there was nothing visibly wrong with the machine - only my dissatisfaction.

I chose a smart cafe plunger which is supposed to keep the coffee warm due to a double insulating layer (or something!). To be honest I haven't really tried how long it keeps the coffee hot - have just enjoyed one coffee at a time. Will try it at the weekend.

Anyhow, top marks to Homestore for going beyond the returns policy on the receipt and in a polite and helpful manner!
