Self Build : Flooring

Hi,

I am starting a self build project soon. I haven't decided what kind of flooring will go where but I am under the following assumptions - please correct me if I am wrong;

Solid Wooden Floors: I need to put down 9 inch joists straight onto the concrete raft foundation after hardcore and binding done. I can insulate between these joists. I can put chipboard on top of the joists before i lay the solid wood flooring to lessen the 'springyness'. Not sure where service pipes go in this case. Thru the joists ?

Semi-Solid Floors: This is generally cheaper than solid wooden floors. I need to put insulation boards (100mm) on concrete raft foundation after hardcore and binding done. Then I need to pour 75mm screed (smoother concrete) on top of insulation and service piping. Then I lay the semi-solid flooring.

Tiles : Same as semi-solid floors.

Laminate flooring : Same as semi-solid floors.

To sum up, if I am laying solid flooring, I need to prevent the screed subfloor being poured in that room.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

your wrong,

you can pour your screed, and place all the flooring on the screed, when you say service pipes what do you mean by this? there'll be little service pipes in your screed only grey water outfalls, vacuum system, plumbing and heating, and some electrics.

So you can lay solid wood flooring directly onto a screed floor ? I presume you will still need wooden batten underneath.

Yes, services are plumbing and electrics.

i ubderstand that you could batten out with 2x1 or thereabouts and nail solid floor to that... but i wonder hw that effects underfloor heating or pipes to rads i.e. puncturing the pipes.

also what is the minimum requirement for the slab? i have 8 inches above the blinding in which i would like to put 100mm kingspan insulation and then slab: but that would mean that the slab would only be 4" or 100mm. does anyone know min slab thickness, before i go and ask the "professionals"?

By "slab", do you mean screed cement ?
I am putting down 100mm insulation and then 75mm screed. So the engineer says anyway.

yes, screed cement is exactly what i mean, and im delighted to hear that your putting down 75mm of screed, approved by engineer, which means that ill have enough room to put in a decent amount of insulation without digging up the hardcore!

You could float your wood floor. Both laminated and solid. One web site that might be of interest [broken link removed]
