hi, i have a halifax credit card, with 2 curved corners.

i had a problem with it in south america, the machines didn't like it.

they said it could be the shape.... i thought it could be, or it could be just that i was in south america.........

anyway, was over in edinburgh, and had the same problem!

does anyone here have the same card, and experience similar problems?

The Halifax card has two very curved corners, probably like the circumference of a €1 coin. I have used it in Halifax UK and it worked - Havent tried anywhere else... I think I will wait until I read more on this thread.

OK - so it's the degree of curvature that is at issue here. Anybody got a pic of such a card?

I've a credit and debit card from Halifax and haven't encountered any problems with ATMs or point of sale machines.

I'd have a problem if I had a card that looked like the example above though....not being a Man U fan!! :)

Thanks! Odd shape alright...

The only problem I had with the shape of the halifax card was in Paris as the railway station where a sign warned that odd shaped cards might not be coming out of the ticket printer again.

yes, the girl on the phone was saying that the mint card doesn't pose any problems in the uk....... but that seems to just have one big curve, prob not on the magnetic strip.

but that, no odd shaped card sign doens't fill me with confidence..

Aib (I think) issued student credit cards with this type of curve some years ago. It wouldn't work in many countries, USA included, so they withdrew it from the market.

I have one of these and never had problems with it yet. It's been to france and all around SE Asia.

Could it be the type of card (Visa Debit as opposed to CC) rather than the shape? There have been a few posts here about certain shops not accepting the Halifax Visa Debit card, and I experienced it myself in a shop in Limerick. AFAIK it is the first Visa Debit card issued in Ireland and not all places are set up for it (perhaps South America is same).

I'm a big fan of the curved card. I have had an AIB credit card for the last couple of years. It has one curved corner and works fine everywhere except in car parking machines. Security have let me off paying for parking(Ilax & Dundrum) when i'm bothered to point out to them that the fault is with their machine and the card was working fine prior to their machine refusing it.

I used to have a see-through curved card (student MC from AIB) and it caused a few problems. The UGC/Cineworld ticket collection machine in particular used to like eating them - so much so that they put a photo of the card up on the machine, telling people not to use them. The AIB website also has this disclaimer:

"AIB mc² Student MasterCard has a funky new design and is first to the Irish market. Some ATMs, vending machines and POS devices may not have the technology to accept this card and may reject or retain it. This includes some cinema, train and car park ticketing machines."

Clearly some ATMs just aren't hip to the rhythm of the get-down-and-get-funky credit card. Way to get in debt man!
