Toyota Celica - a good buy?

My friend is thinking of buying a 1995 Toyota Celica, priced at €3000. We took it for a spin over the weekend and it seems to good to be true... Are there any known associated problems with this type of car?

Just checked Honestjohn myself - under the 'what to watch out for' he says: may have belonged to a drug dealer :D

I drive a Toyota - its 1991 and still going strong.

My brother drives a Celica - never had a moments bother with it.

Nobody builds cars like Toyota - buy with confidence.

Bring your sniffer dog!! Seriously though, dont be afraid to get down on your back with a powerful torch and check every inch for corrosion/fillers.They are a bit rust prone especially uk imports.Engines/gearboxes/suspension are strong enough.Check the spare wheel to see what the tyre is like(worn to one side etc) and then taken off.See if all tyres are the same make which is a good sign of careful ownership.A lot were crashed so go in with your eyes open.A good one is a gem,a bad one will be a wallet bruising dog.

Thanks for all the replies. It is my boyfriend that is buying it and he is a Guard so he should be able to do a thorough history on it. It was so nice to drive that I might trade in my own car!

Don't be fooled by the driving experience,Toyota's hide their sins very well.Unfortunately the NCT guys/gals know all the hiding places!!!

Was out getting my car serviced last week and was chatting to the mechanic. I don't drive one myself but a work collegue has just purchased a Celica. My mechanic warned me to tell him to make sure he gets someone to check out the gearbox before he bought it as they can be problematic. Other than that he said they're a good car.

I was looking at getting the newer celica, but like the older one to.

What is generally considered the better car?
Will take both for a drive soon.

If the OP is looking at a Celica, then I seriously doubt they would entertain a Corolla (and it certainly won't entertain them!!).
