VISA for Switzerland

Hi everyone

What with Switzerland not being in the EU and us not being in the Schengen thing, does that mean we (an Irish and a Romanian) need a VISA to have a weeklong holiday in Switzerland.

According to the Swiss website it does but it seems a bit OTT.

(Fingers crossed that casiopea reads this :) )

I would have thought that the Swiss were the very people who having made a rule might actually apply it? Why do you doubt what "the Swiss website" (do they only have one?) says?

I was there (Zurich) a couple of times in early 2006 and didn't need a visa on an Irish passport. No idea about the Romanian one, though.

I went there for the Ireland/Switzerland football game a while ago and never even considered whetehr I needed one. Nobody asked me for one either, even when I inadvertantly ended up in Germany by exiting the wrong door and had to cross back into Switzerland again!

Hi Rebecca!
For holiday purposes someone from the EU does not require a visa to enter switzerland for up to 90 days.

You can also spend up to a certain number days here working without a visa (Ive forgotten the number but its something like 54 days). Those days are added up during the year so if you come in for one week to work those 5 working days count against that total.

So for an EU person (Romania joined in Jan 2007 I believe?) doesnt require a visa to holiday here.

Clubman, I'd read it on a Swiss government website but just thought it would be impractical considering their location and am in a bit of a flitter trying to snap up tickets with Aer Lingus's sale today.

Thanks a million casiopea - I knew you'd know. Hopefully we'll be flinging ourselves down the slopes in Wengen in the New Year :) We'll toast you with a Gluhwein (or the Swiss equivalent).

Rebecca

This is the official Swiss government immigration site.

I know from having lived there that nationals of EU member states can stay as a tourist for up to 3 months with a valid passport.
